festae questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The upgrade is good. Festaes don't show great color for a looong time aas they are such slow growers especially in smaller tanks. A slow upgrade route will take much longer to grow and color up. Mine didn't colour up fully until 4" and that took about 10 months from .25" fry. And you can't prove f1 origin just by looking at it all you can do with that is trust the person. Also not good to derail your own thread.

I need to spark up my fish life

Didn't mean to derail anything. haha. I want to trade him in because he's an *** and won't let me clean the tank without viciously assaulting me. Can't wait till he's big enough to actually do damage!:headshake

I realize that they won't color up for some time but the juvies pictured all had SOME red in the fins and tails and the ones at the fish store had absolutely no red at all. Is it possible then that they may not be festae or is it just bad diet and bad lighting that could be dulling their colors?

i still wonder why they are called Red Terrors... Have tried several times keeping them. Shiest, more timid Cichlids I have ever had.

Always gave them up. I do not understand the hype, seriously.

The name has nothing do do with how they act with you, but how they can be with each other and other species of fish. Red and Green Terror was a marketing ploy to hype sales when the 2 species were introduced to the hobby. It also was a term coined after observing the fierce battles for territory between the 2 species in their natural habitat.

no problem. It is possible the poor lighting and diet. But personally I think its easy to spot a festae. Mine had color in the fin from .5" but it was really hard to see you need them to be in the perfect lightingand mood. It is also possible of stress festaes change colors depending on mood. My festae went pail when I gave her a time out in a 20g long.

decided to stay away from festae for now. I have a tank I could house them in but went back into the store today and the store owner relabeled the tank as mayans. must have researched it after I bombed him with questions and showed doubt as to what they were. when I have researched them and educated myself better I will revisit the venture. and then I will just order from Rapps so I know what I am getting for sure. Thanks for all of your help.
