festae and carpinte both get black on the dorsal whether or not it is a male or female.
male and female festae have distinct features that show the sex.
just by looking at a female festae you should know by the dark
patterns on the body.
males have blue on their fins and females have more dark shades on them.
females also seem to look a big more red.

this festae does have some blue but i'm sticking with female.

True but Females also have blue in the fins.I had 2 males and both looked like this one at that size. But my Female showed distinct 'female traits" at bout 3.25".These guys can fool Ya up to 5 or 6"

Nice looking festae!

...going with male myself, blue spangles on soft rays of dorsal and anal fin plus the spangles on the caudal fin and body, black on the dorsal doesn't mean much with festae.
