I don't know what a KK is but I think his first flowerhorn is a tan king.

On another note, I'd rather have a nice looking tank with a ugly fish in it rather than have those ugly plants and gravel (no offense.)

Gee that wasnt very nice. :banhim:

no midasman that is my KML.

camp my tanking is still tiny only maybe 1.5inches so far. ;)

Look forward to seeing him, tan kings are probably my favorite strain of flowerhorns but I'd rather work on my own weird strains than pay top dollar for fish everybody is going to be breeding in a few years. Hopefully they will be cheap after theres a few breeders in the states.. Then I can afford one LOL.

I've always used gravel, I'm just a sand or barebottom guy now. I still use gravel in a few tanks but it's usually a flat color or two really close colors. Right now I've got flat white, flat blue (oldest tank), 2 different shades of purple mixed, blue+white+baby blue+glow in the dark gravel LOL.

That's why I said no offense. Honestly though, that gravel can't appeal to anyone. It's just used to bring out the fishes colors.

Sand is nice.. but after your FH is large you'll get tired of rinsing your filters out when you hear the sand in the impeller(s).. I did.. If you're going to do a substrate with FH gravel all the way IMO.

haven't had that problem yet but my biggest fish with sand are only 9". My xp3 does like to eat sand though, I had to adjust my input so it wouldn't pull sand into my filter.

After thinking about my response you're probably right.. Here's why..

I think the sand I was using was a light/small grain sand. It might be good to only use heavier grade sand. I think I was using 3m S grade and it was a very light sand. Might have been more of a grade problem then me saying all sand in general. Sorry about that.

If you use back filters then sands a p.i.a:irked:

I have a bit of sand in my 150g but the filteration is gravity fed like and the intake tubes are way up high. My fish never spits out him gravel that high up!

In my 55g the sands always in the back filter.... Its almost due for a new impeller now too...:(

I have sand in my 55 but i have small sevs in there so its no biggie.
I dont think id do sand with Herbert cuz he likes to move stuff and i do havew the back filters..
Somthing else was braught to my attention about bare bottoms..

the "substrate" is meant to hold the bacteria.. so its kind of necessary to have something in there eh? So im saying wouldnt it be harder to keep your levels right etc etc?

YES! Very true. Plus you don't have to do water changes ever day.
