ok so i am getting a new bigger tank soon and i was thinking of putting somthing a little different in my smaller tank i was gunna get a fahaka puffer but the tank isnt big enough so i decided on a figure 8 puffer. now i went to look up stuff about them and every website says somthing different. so here are my questions
1. brackish water/freshwater
2. tanmates
3. what is best to feed

They are brackish an from what ive heard they can be kept in a community tank. That about all I know. Might want to put this in Puffer forum

Brackish fish. They do really well with bumblebee gobies. How big is the tank you are planning on putting it in? They eat snails, bloodworms and shrimp.

Figure Eights are fantastic puffers. They prefer low salinity brackish tanks. so a 1.05 sg would be perfect for long term.

I don't know the size of your tank but they do great in long tanks. A 20 gallon long is perfect for 2 although when older they may start to fight. They can be kept with smaller Molly, Bumble Bee Boby and a few other brackish species.

They can be made to eat meaty pellet food but it is very hard getting that to work out regularly and most feed them live shrimps, snails, worms and frozen krill, cockle and bloodworms.

TFH hobbyist had a good article on them by Pufferpunk. She is a knowledgeable source for F8 info although she sometimes gets a little carried away. I would to if I spent as much time seeing hundreds of people kill puffers I guess. Then again I watched someone buy one of two Fangs today and I am sure it will be dead in a week. Mine seems to be pretty good though.

here is the article on the puffer forum its not gospel but its pretty solid

^ i think you left out a 0 for salinity, it should be SG is best around 1.005 - 1.008...

Anyway, as far as feeding, yup, you can do live or de-frosted frozen shrimp, bloodworms, scallops and all types of frozen foods just chop it up to a size they can deal with...

Snails should also be part of their diet to help keep teeth trimmed...

As far as tankmates, as stated, bumblebee gobies seem to make good tank mates, and tank size, aim for about 15G for one, so about 30G for a pair...

LOL @ KGB! :)

thanks for all the advice and i have a 20G normal. also when you say other brackish fish does that include redtail sharks

No, in a 20g, you could keep a single F8 & 3-4 bumblebee gobies.

ok and the brackish water do i just get the stuff like you start a saltwater tank with but just put not as much
