i just started plumbing so my sump needs to be filled with actual filter material next. I used to have the water come in and fall on nylon floor scrubber pads in the end chamber, middle chamber was filled with lava rocks, then pump out after bubble wall. this sump used to be for saltwater and had a bioball wet/dry. I have a huge amount of bioballs but no room for the dry parts of the wet dry. dimensions are 48"x18"x18". the end chamber is 17", middle is 23", then the bubble wall end chamber.

end chamber 17"

middle 23"

bubble wall

starting plumbing the overflow

so i'm thinking about having the water drain into filter socks in the section before bubble wall, then fill the second chamber with some kind of mechanical, maybe poret foam??? then do pot scrubbers in the last section with the pump and heaters? should I add a baffle in the second (middle)chamber ? guess im not sure how to maximize my sump. its on a 240g that's going to house lots of bichirs and a few other large fish.
and I have looked at the lets see inside your sump thread hence the questions. thanks in advance!

It sounds like you have an excellent plan but I personally would add bio media after the poret foam. Your filter sock and Poret Foam will already provide mechanical filtration. The Poret Foam will provide both mechanical and bio filtration. So adding bio after would be my choice.

I was thinking water in through the sock across the bubble wall into the middle chamber with poret foam then into the last chamber with bio? I was thinking of using something other than lava rocks like nano-tech balls or the scrubbies???? theres gotta be better things than lava rock for a large bio load.

Why not go the k1 route?

mostly cost. I was looking at the poret foam squares that do the same thing.
Fluidising poret foam? There are cheaper alternatives to k1 that has more surface area. I use oase hel-x 13 and hel-x 17 in my sumps. I think i pay 49euro for 50L of media.

Can you get a full length shot? If I am understanding it correctly though, I'd do filter socks through the divet pond foam (link below). Then in the big chamber my heaters and a 1 Gallon bucket of Seachem matrix. But as others have mentioned, all your mechanical should be before the bio media for sure.
