fill up tank with warm water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I change 150 gallons every week in my 210. I match the tank temperature to within a degree or two. I have a hot and a cold pipe that come from a washer hook up i had installed so I just use the valves to adjust temp. This fills my sump which fills my tank and I dechlorinate directly in the tank. By the way I have a tankless water heater and they are incredible for water changes!

yea well thats what i thougt... but one of my idiot friends told me i was crazy for doin that.. theyre like just put cold tap... so just needed to verify to show this idiot :screwy:

I bet your friend has no idea what water conditioner is either..... I always use warm/lukewarm water when refilling.

i try to match the best i can, im usually a degree or so off but ive never had any problems. More importantly i try to make sure my water is well aerated. The filter runs at full blast and a powerhead that also pushes air is run.

i find that without aeration the fish express a lack of oxygen and often get very stressed. i live on a well, i presume this has something to do with it. I dont use any sort of dechlorinator.

I do both...at the same time!

In the past, I used to try to set the temp coming out of the faucet to match my 79-80 degree tank water. This was when I lived in WI. Now I live in SW FL and I found that when I go to full cold on my sink, it comes out around 80 degrees!

I have no 'cold' water. I'm guessing that will change a little in the winter...for about 2 weeks. Some people have Indian Summers, we have Indian Winters!

IMO, the temp of water going in should be relatively close to the water coming out.

How can anyone argue with that logic?

I also like the "slightly" warmer approach. I figure that we take a nice hot shower every day! Not only does it NOT cause us any challenge, it feels freakin' awesome! Same applys to my fish.

Not "hot" mind you, but they do seem to appreciate the the slightly warmer temperature water during changes.

Argument is very simple:

It cost WAY LESS $$$ TIME to heat the water from the sink with your hot water heater thanh to heat it in your aquarium with electric tank heaters!

Your fish will appreciate the warmer temperature for the few minutes to hours before ambient room temperature (in conjunction with the tank heaters) brings your temperature DOWN to normal. They would be less comfortable and stress more at the MUCH LONGER period of time in COOLER water waiting for the tank heater & ambient room temperature to RAISE the temperature to normal.

IMO your logic is flawed and that is my opinion on a 100% valid argument!

I always fill a bit cooler when I do small water changes (just so I don't have to wait for the water to heat up), but whenever I change more than a quarter of the water I always try to get as close as possible.

Even the worst pet shop employee knows that when you do water changes, fish don't like sudden temperature drops. Most fish can tolerate it, but if you get in the habit and get a sensitive fish it can die from the temp swing.

Whats the point of using warm water?
thats for you, you live pretty close to the Equator, so it must be very warm in there, there is no need to use warm water from your water system because the water in Singapore usually warm enough for tropical fish!
