fill up tank with warm water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the water temperature in tank shouldn't be change more than 2 degree C( about 3.6 F) in a short time(like when doing water change) no mater colder or warmer! warmer can give them stress and with cold water fish, they can get sick. Colder water make them stress too, and for most of tropical fish, they can get white spots! some big fish may seem fine with large temperature change, it because they are very strong and those thing don't have much effect on them; but still need to avoid large temperature change in a short period of time to keep them healthy! :D

I usually add water thats a bit colder than my tank so that it simulates a cool rain (which can trigger spawning for some of my ladies). But you cant make it too cold, obviously.

+1, but not by more than a degree or two

I have 3 tanks. I fill directly from the electric hot water tank. But it does not come out hot like you would think because hot water tanks do not heat from the very bottom. It will be warm for about 4 or 5 minutes before it starts to get cool (especially during winter). But when I used to come directly from the sink I only used cold water. But I would add about 20 gallons to each tank then wait about 30-60 minutes and add another 20 gallons until they are full.

I've wondered before when using warm water from the tank if there is any copper in the water from the hot water cylinder. Any thoughts?

tempureture change isn't as big a deal as people make them out to be. yeah drastic change is not good but think about what happens in nature. there are cold currents and warm currents in the water fish live in plus the deeper u go in a river or lake the cooler the water gets and the higher up u go the warmer the water gets especially on a sunny day and it is not only 1 or 2 degrees.

I used to do WC with the same water temp with my tank temp give it 1-3 degree different and I do my WVC 25% every week or 2 depands on my mood LOL
One day it was raining outside when I was doing WC and got me thinking about fish in their nature and the rain. The rain will always be alot colder than the water in the ponds/rivers. Since then I always do WC with cold water straight by running cold water hose bibb to my sump every water change with 25% water replaced.
In my medium size tank my mollies would get horny and breed non stop LOL,

You are right on the money. To the op I hate to say that ur friend were right and he is not the idiot, as as long as u don't put block of ice its all good and natural

I dont like to use warm water because it sits in the hot water tank and i heard there are mineral build-up that happen in there depending on how old your hot water tank is.
I let the water age in a bin and by the time its aged its usually room temp.
I wont have to do that anymore cuz i installing a continuous drip to my new tank

If you don't agree then make a cold bath and toss your fishes in there, lol

I agree, I run the tap, fill a glass check with thermometer and adjust, test again.. then add 250 litres of the stuff.
Spend more time messing with the mixer than I do carrying buckets lol
