I have a Foster and Smith Biosystem 3 filter with a skimmer and it works great. Skimmer is adjustable so it can be turned off during feeding. The filter actually does a great job, filter media is pretty cheap too. It is noisier than my other larger filters but it really keeps the water clean on my 135.
Something you can try is to turn your filters and powerheads in different directions. There maybe dead spots of water in your tank that are becoming low in oxygen and the film may be coming from that. For the guy with the long tank, do you got the filter on the skinny end so that the output can flow across the entire surface?
Howdy, simply run a bypass on your canister and hook up a surface extractor. I am running the Eheim Surface Extractor, but there are others, too. HarleyK
I have 2 fx5's running I have all 4 outputs pointed at the surface now guess ill see if this work .... may try a surface skimmer to cause I'm not sure if I like all that movement up top
