I enjoyed your posts and yes in the end its all about individual choice. The filters are both well made and well recieved by those who use them.....
I like bikes and I have a few of them - a Ducati 996 and a Yamaha V-max. I have many opportunities to either own or use Harleys, and I find they offer something different for each model. I kinda enjoy the V-rod right now, and see the similarities between that and my V-max.
My current fish are 10 Fronts (brundis sp?) 4 yellow labs, 1 sydonitis (sp) in a 220 Gallon. The FX5 is the king, when it comes to this tank. Crystal clear perfect water.... I also have a 55 gallon and a 30 gallon which have small SA/CA cichlids (pikes, texas, dempsey, 4-line cat, rafelle.) all running Aqua clear 500's ....
I have some pictures in my posts of my older tanks that included everything under the sun - I will have to upload those old as well as new, and some bikes....I also have a tractor (deere) that runs on diesel (you mentioned diesel earlier just in case someone was curious - actually Slammer (another member here) and I are tractor fanatics on another forum

I don't want to de-rail the thread any further than we already have , but this seems to be essential info for two guy to get to know each other
I have a 1200 Sportster, built 1993. Got her new when I was 19 (speaking of investing wisely at young age...), and I wouldn't want to trade her for anything. Love at first sight. She's sporty, yet still chopper. Throughout the years, I've had the chance to ride several other models, and they make great sense here in the Midwest where streets are straight for hundreds of miles (literally). However, I still love the agility of my Sporty. I think we'll grow old together (or we already did...)

Your tanks sound very nice. I recently had some trouble with the clarity in my tank, but I think that's not the filter's fault per se. When you customize you make mistakes along your way to optimization (on bikes and on filters, I guess...), and I need to put some finer media in there. Maybe I'll find time over Easter... In that regard, the FX5 is better right off the shelve since it comes with foam. But I'll take care of mine this weekend

Im now totally biased...I hate all things Eheim

thats is the best debate i'v read yet concerning the two filters and harley made a very good point well several regaurding the eheim eheim designs the filter for minamal bypass wich produces a slower flow rate which is good the more time the water is contact with the bio media the better of a job it can do the eheim wet dry i have has a very low flow rate but i'm assurred that my ammonnia and nitrites are nuked before headind out the other end.

i'm a harley fan also wouldnt buy anything else.

Not at all its a spoof or tongue in-cheek comment....however I have had to open the eyes blinded by name brand only on a number of threads early on, but now the products speaks for itself so I dont have to anymore.....

As for my setups - I will always go for the maxium turnover rate over slower rate.
There is something to be said when the turnover rate is high - the clearer the water, better conditions - My own personal experience can be summed up this way- I havent lost a fish due to poor quality conditions or disease in over 20 years.

Yeah, there are some good filters out there. The choice is tough and depends on many factors but is also greatly influenced by personal preference and good/bad experience. To each his own, and there is no reason for doubt if a setup works:

That's great, and it makes two of us. Which once again shows that both ways work .

I have used fluval, rena and ehiem for different tanks/ setups. I have had great success with both ehiem and rena and poor experiece with fluval. My 404's leaked and broke down within a year for one and the second made it a little longer. My Ehiems are still running after 6-8 years. The rena is brand new but so far so good.

I have to admit the fx5 does look good but because of the issuses I have had with them in the past I cannot justifiy the risk in buying another fluval. Maybe if the fx5 can prove itself over time I might give it a shot. The price is definatly right.

I guess to be perfectly honest the fluvals were on my uncles tanks ...... but the filters still performed as mentioned.

i agree sunpoe i have a fluval that the seal never sits right have to jump on the thing and it never primes takes an hour but a newer one i have no problems i think they had a bad batch and fixed it i even replaced the head on the bad one still does the same thing

I also forgot to mention that I have had a problem with Ehiem it was with their wet and dry type filters; after a year or so the wet and dry mechanism just seemed to function incorrectly. Never could get it to work properly again. Just used it as a normal canister after that.

I know, I should have joined the other debate ... but that was about the Eheim Pro 3, and I am biased since I own one Looking back, I should have gotten the 2260.

I'm receiving my Pro 3 on Monday or Tuesday. Do you really feell the 2260 is a better option? Maybe I'll pick up one of those down the road as well and have some kick ass filtration on my 300 gal.

I can get an FX5 for $340 Cdn taxes in, but I'm too wary of fluval. I'll give that filter another year before reconsidering.
