So my power filter died and I went out and replaced it with a pennplax700. I have a 55gallon with a gt 6" and 2 bala sharks about 4". with weekly gravel vac and 50% water changes My question is should I be fine while the filter cycles? All levels are good except my buffer is a little low, should I get some chems or wait it out

u didn't save any media from ur old filter? its not good if u have those fish in an uncycled tank. ur bound to have an ammonia spike eventually.

as long as you are only changing out the filter, I would think you should be fine. its the same idea as if you change the filter media, or the cartridges. I wouldn't waste my money on most of the products you see that claim to cycle the tank fast. the only product i can think of that i would make sure you have is prime. its excellent for treating water for WC as well as in an emergency with spikes in ammonia/nitrite/nitrate.

its not a totally uncycled tank if he has the same gravel, plants, deco, etc.

i don't know what this guy's tank looks like.. for all i know its just a glass box with water in it..

he never stated that he has gravel or plants, so im not gonna assume he does.
