So guys i was just digging through all my old filters and noticed i have a magnum 350 just laying there. Do you think if i filled this thing full with ceriamics it would make a good bio filter , i mean its got such a huge open space. I dont know just a thought i wanted to throw out there and get some feed back on.

yea thats what i thought , i dont like how they clog up , and my tank is already crystal clear , but i love additon filters just not clogging.... so if it would actually do something with cerimics in there i would put it on there, but would cerimics be the best choice for the bio media , ( remember it willl be underwater the whole time)

why not run a polishing filter in it. if you already have a sufficent bio filter it would be helping polish water instead of just making space for bacteria.

I did this with a spare AC30 I had laying around. It works great! I try to use as many different types of surfaces as possible, but just a big bag of Biomax will work as extra bio. Other good media is out there, so try to mix it up a bit. Slap an AC50 sponge on the intake for a pre-filter, then put some filter floss after the bio right before the output for water polishing. The floss also keeps the flow rate down, since you want the water to stay in contact with the BB as long as possible... I change the floss whenever it gets brown all the way through, about once a week.

because i hate the clogging , on my tank the magnum runs for 2 days then it is clogged , due to so much sand getting kicked up. Its a pain i could still do the filter floss ( polish) and fill it with bio , i guess my new question is can i have a list of bio material that is the best for fully submerged , i know bio balls scrubbies are best for trickle but i dont know about fully submerged media

bio max, i ahev had succes with bio balls in canisters marinelands come with them. sea chem makes some interesting medias eheim substrate pro, the list gos on i like bio max beads

1) If you don't like the clogging, just set the intake as close to the surface as possible. Minimal clogging. When I ran an extra HOB on my tank (before it was planted), I had water polishing pads in it and the intake about 2" below the surface. Worked great.

2) Screw bioballs and ceramic media, that's for people who wanted to waste space with a ridiculously huge sump/wet-dry that doesn't really help that much anyways. The best way to go is sintered glass. (Rena Siporax or Ehfrisubstrat Pro) The surface area blows anything else away.

cool thanks guys i will look into some of these , and i really dont need the polishing my sump already has polishers in it , thing is that my moray is eating more and more its retarded just last week he went from eating 1 pound a day to a pound and a half , and yesterday i fed him a 12 inch red devil , and later that night he was still hungry.... But he doesnt eat the 3 inch triggers in there ( they clean his teeth , amazing to watch). Just my 12 inch queen angel that i pay sooo much for ... ***... so thats now a nurse shark and miniatus grouper and queen angel , all same size except the nurse was creeping on 2 feet. So im looking more for the bio load , thats why id rather not do polishing ( just to clear up why i need more bio). Tank is crystal clear but im afriad im running close to it not being , and everytime he poops the tank is cloudly for 2 hours.

If your tank consistently has zero ammonia/nitrites currently... what benefit could adding another filter stuffed with bio media offer?

I suggest either using it as a polisher or savign the cost/effort of running it and leave it in the closet...

Adding "more bio media" to a tank that consistently has zero ammonia/nitrite makes absolutely no sense...

Unless you believe that some of the bio medias are capable of housing anaerobic bacteria in oxygen rich water, which just doesn't happen...
