So I just locked down a 125 gallon acrylic truvu aquarium and stand from a coworker for $100. Not a bad deal me thinks :naughty:. So anyways I've never used a sump system before nor had a tank of this size, but from what I can tell it's my only option for something this size. I would like some suggestions on what I should be using filter wise with this setup. I would really appreciate any feedback you guys could give me.

Thanks!

its very easy to drill holes in acrylic for overflows, or u can get an overflow box.

depends how many rays u keep in there. if only one then u could just do the fx5. if 2 or more i would do a sump. also remember that rays get big so an upgrade would be in your near future whatever u do

I have two retics at the moment and a few discus, I was hoping this would be my upgrade actually, right now the one's 6" and the other's 4.5". If I need to go larger later on then so be it, but I imagine this will do for the next couple years atleast. Well I hope. I would prefer to go with whatever the best option is for them. If a sump is the best option then I'll do what I need to. please enlighten me :)

You don't NEED a sump to run a good filter. Sumps are good for adding water volume, and a place to run filters off of.

Got a pic of the way it's drilled? I'll bet a good filter isn't going to be hard at all.

I'll have the tank in a few days and I can post some pics. Basicly there's no overflows installed (but I've been considering adding some). On the top of the aquarium there's two holes drilled in the acrylic. Maybe 1 - 1.5 inches in diameter in the rear left and rear right of the aquarium top. I'm guessing one for the intake tube and one for the return. It's acrylic so I'm not opposed to making modifications to it. Lets just say if you had a 120 gallon acrylic tank for rays and could add any filter system to it, then what would it be?............

.

the red is where the holes are. the image is of a different series tank but close enough.

I'd crack open Aquatic Eco's latest issue and start there.
Couple of mag drive pumps. One for the mechanical filter (something like the Ocean Clear from Red Sea), one for just recirculation up into a bio tower feeding back into the tank via gravity.
