Hey guys, i am in the process of starting up a 110 gallon i am looking at getting either 1 filter that can handle the 110 gallon alone or two of the same filters. Looking for something quiet but it will be in a wooden stand so it will absorb some sound. I am mostly looking towards getting one filter because i think cleaning and maintenance would be easier but two filters are also better for dependency. So which filter would you guys recommend keeping in mind i want crystal clear water? :)

FX5! I just got my first one last week and the thing is amazing. Whisper quiet! I am using it on a 300G to polish the water but it would do nicely on a 100G tank.

So your saying that one single fx5 would be good enough to handle a 110 gallon and keep the water crystal clear?

It's better to have two filters than one in case one breaks or so you can alternate cleaning them. And getting your water crystal clear really depends on what filter media you use.

x2 . . . I have at least two filters on every tank I own, and sometimes 3 . . . I stagger cleanings, so that a different filter gets cleaned each month

if you ask for filter recommendations, you will get multiple answers that may or may not help. personally, I would recommend you get two cannister filters, and that each of them be rated to handle your 110G tank . . .

after that, which cannister you choose largely depends on your budget . . . I use Eheim classics, but other people will swear by Fluval, Cascade or some other filter and feel just as strongly about it . . .

I definitely agree with the two filter idea. There is not a tank in my apartment that does not have two filters on it. I'm a student, so budget was a factor for me, so I went with HOB filters, but you can hold a lot of media with some canister filters.
Not a canister owner myself and I can only go off what I have heard in this case, but I have heard good things about Xp3's
But look around at different filters and see what fits your budget and still does a great job.
Best of luck

So would to 2 Rena Xp3 be enough? I know media counts but turnover rate is what is killing me here. I have seen people here use 2 filters and only have a 4 turnover rate per hour but their water is crystal clear but others say that turnover rate is important and should be around 8.

And also dimensions are 48"x18"x30" if that helps, and thanks

I have a 150 and use 2 xp3s and a HOB AC110...

I agree 100% about having 2 filters on your tank....if budget is a problem one canister and 1 HOB would work too....as far as water clarity its going to depend on your stock as well. What are you planning on keeping and how many?

And i am planning on keeping central and south american cichlids and have the tank moderately stocked with them. Not really sure as to what specific fish i want. Will 2 xp3's be enough? I am going to have sand and the tank is 30" high so i don't want to see debris all over the sand.
