Filter Recommendation

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Theres no snails in the tank

The stock is around 9 cichlids (malawi and tanganyika), 2 bristle nose plecos, and one small syn. catfish

Yeah dude I have 2 marineland H.O.T. Magnum canister filters and only 1 of them has went out after 7 years. 99 bucks for 1 by the way.

I've been having no luck with filters for my 30 gallon cichlid tank. I am probably on my fifth filter in 8 years as they always wear out quickly and pump water with no force. Ive gone through fluvals, eheims, and am now using a marineland.

Can anyone recommend a good filter for a heavily stocked cichlid tank?

(Im most likely upgrading to a 36 gallon bowfront by the way)

I also have a very heavily stocked 30 gallon.... I have Two AC 70's (two sponges + ceramic media on each -- no chemical media) + a cascade 1000 canister filter ..... running for years without any problems ....if you have substrate, you can "tie" a sponge to the inlets of all filters..... this way no substrate can get into any of your filters .... only problem with this is that the sponges may be an eye sore...... and if you want more water movement just add a power head....

I have a 75 gal with >20 Malawi and Tanganyikans and my Eheim canister does the job. Be sure to wash the pad about once a month to prevent clogging. I have some sand and this gets into the filter and fouls the pad. The key though is frequent water changes. I do at least two a week - about 30-40% each. Also, get a test kit and monitor your nitrogen levels.

I've been using eheims that I bought 6+ years ago. When you clean the impeller, also clean out the impeller area with a q-tip. Helps get rid of all the gunk in there.

Any of the Renas xp series would work well in your situation, but I wouldnt recommend the xp4. Impeller is junk. I have 2 xp3's that have been running flawlessly for over 4 year.

I would go with the Ac110 also Great filter and on amazon you can get them for under $70 bucks, I actually just bought 3 FX5's on there for 207 each with free shipping!!!!! Part of the the filteration for my 390 hehe :WHOA::nilly:
