For everyone using filter socks - especially those who have to change them every other day - try stuffing the socks with filter floss :naughty:. (this stuff)

Then, when you only have to change your socks every week, or two; instead of every day, or two, post your results here.

I always wondered how it would work to stack filter socks in order of decreasing fineness. Ex. 100 inside a 50 inside a 10. That way the finest ones won't clog as quickly since the coarser ones would catch the larger particles first. The 100s could even be filled with the pillow stuffing to add another layer of mech filtration.

Filter socks are like socks. The longer you go between changes the more they stink. LOL! In the case of filter socks, changing them every couple of days removes crud from your tanks, and this helps keep your nitrates down.

^That's funny, but

...and this helps keep your nitrates down.

I disagree. There should be no difference in nitrates between changing a sock every couple of days and changing a poly-stuffed sock every week.

Anyone who has to change mechanical filtration every couple of days in order to control the biological filtration is doing it wrong and needs to start googling "denitrification" and "DIY denitrator".

It is a simple fact that if you can remove fish waste before it is broken down, you will have less nitrates.

water flow has essentially taken much of the nitrates out of the solid waste caught in the socks

They make socks like that already Mcmasters sells them, 100micron inside a 50 micron.
