Filter socks with ray filtration...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i usually run an empty load before i throw them in. also dont let the wifey see how dirty they are before you put them in the washer. they can get pretty nasty lol.

Yup, always run an empty first. Gotta really rough em up before going into the washer. Can hide sand in them (if you run sand substrate) and boy stuff a washin machine with 4 sand bags and be prepared to replace mangled washing machine "coupler". :(

Not sure how much flow you guys have through them, I have 2 different setups. 1 is a single sock on a newer dart pump 175 gallon system and that thing will plug and overflow pretty quick. Big system's about 1200 gallons and has 2 older Darts and 4 socks and I bet that thing wouldn't overflow if let go for a month.

i use 3 on a hammerhead pump and they last a very long time. i use to run two on it but they would overflow too fast but three seams to do the trick perfect.

All I gotta say is wow on these socks! Huge and good so far. My tank has crystal clear water again! Yay I'm running 2 socks on a 4800gph pump. 340 total gal I believe

Thanks for the link guys! Just ordered 10 to try out on my various fish systems!

i dont use socks just 3 sheets of jap mat that fill the 1st compartment of my sump i then wash them every 4-6 months been running the tank like this for near 2 years now with no problems

I know it works for you but I don't like the idea of the same waste sitting in my sump for 4-6 months. I am more than happy to clean filter socks weekly.

I am sure it doesn't "hurt" anything to do it your way but I am striving for perfect even though I will never achieve it.

I have only cleaned the pond filter sponges once in a year on my 100gal sump and they were pretty clean, it think it is due to going through masses of k1 first and the rubbish settles at the bottom, I have siphoned it out and it nearly filled a bucket with gunk, this is 1 yr in. My external filter gets cleaned every few months and this does most of the fine work but I also run a sock every now and then.

jap mat is the same sort of thing as a pond pre filter oh hold up it is the same but 10 x better ;)

the 1st compartment of my sump is 10 inch wide x 30 inch long the jap mat is in 3 laryer 1 on top of each other each bit is about 2 inch thick its great stuff

a good filter should brake down waste how offten does a pond bucket need cleaning not that much you should treat a large tank like a small pond this is not directed at you toby

everytime you clean a filter you do it damage which takes time to repair

even when i run pro3 2080s i only used to open them every 6 months wash the pre filter and change the white pads my rays bred in both set ups so it cant be that bad
