being that i have my tank decorated just how i want it, and my fish are doing quite well along with my tank and water quality. as i mentioned before i plan on upgrading to the 2-300 gallon range once i move. im looking into getting a canister filter. one that will handle around 250-300 gallons. this will originaly be applied to my 75 untill i upgrade. my biowheel 350 is doing fine but i want something that is REALLY going to make my water crystal clear. i was wondering if anyone might have any recomendations for a certain brand or type. i would like to keep this in the 150.00 range if possible. any companies i should stay away from. what features should i look for?

+2. I just got one under a month old for $230. Not too many on CL around here.

When you upgrade to the 2-300, just get another one. I think that would be pushing it for one Fx5 even though they are "rated" for up to 400 gallons. I love how the box says 925 GPH but the manual says something around 500 with filter media.

Oh, and read the manual before hooking it up so you won't be freaked out when it shuts down after two minutes.

so is fluval the only way to go? whats up with eheim filters anyone have any experience with these

To be honest I just got a generic cheapo knockoff SUN SUN filter on ebay...it's rated at 375 gph and I'll be honest...the thing is built well and the quality is good. I'm actually really impressed. I have 65 bucks into it (shipping included!). I'd go on EBAY! and type in "canister filter" and see what comes up...there are a few "bad" knockoff brands, but if you find a decent one and post it online here...people will chime in if it is good or not. Thats what I did. Price wise...can't beat it. "name brand" canisters are a complete rip off IMHO. Its a pump and a plastic tub.

just read the owners manual on the fluval fx5 online.... i have to be honest it has alot of nice features but the filter media that needs to be replace montly is not what i had in mind. i was under the impression that with the occasional change of charcoal and a rinse of the filter. it would be good. the fact that i gotta change 3 different kinds of filter media monthly isnt impressing me.

I have absolutely no intentions of changing 3 types of media. I filled the bottom two baskets with Matrix, and the top w/ Fluval Ceramic Rings. I'll open mine every month or so just to give everything a rinse. Won't be replacing sponges unless their not usable.
