i have a 125 with south and central american cichlids what size and type of filter do people recomend for crystle clear water

For a clean tank, and cycled tank, one bio filter, and one mech filter would be recommended. I personally would recommend the use of an Eheim 2217, 2028, 2076, 2078 for bio, and an AC110 for mech filtration, running ehfimech and efhisubstrat pro in the eheim, and 2 foam blocks, and 1 biomax in the ac110.
EHEIM EHEIM EHEIM oh and EHEIM lol. I say go for a 2028 or a 2217 if you want to go cheaper. The Multi-stage c-360 from Marineland is pretty good as well my dad just ordered one from drsfostersmith.com with a wet/dry because his 2215 just went after 15 years of running. We don't know what happened it just made a clicking noise then stopped and would start back up. The 2215 is a very good canister as well and strongly recommend it.

on my 150 I have 2 Emp 400's and a Fluval FX5 I personally dont like eheims because I have had a few bad experiences and to me they are overly priced...

That is a very generic thing to say. Eheim filters can range from fairly bad to very good. As do fluvals. Eheims in general are a well built filter, and their media is hard pressed to be passed.
FX5 are good filters, but they have too much foam IMO, but that makes them great in terms of a mech filter. Again, it is a bad idea to run a tank on only one filter. Which is why I recommended what I did originally.fish boy in toronto;1031952;1031952 said:
As much as I like the FX5 you shouldn't run your tank with just it alone. If you want to use the FX5 then add a good HOB bio-filter like the Emporer 400's If you want to use an eheim canister (better bio-filtration) then use a pair of AC110 for extra mechanical filtration. Either way you go you should run a couple of Hydro5 sponge filters for safety.
