Several of the LFS here throw some bio-balls in the tanks for a couple of weeks to months and charge extra as "seeded" or "mature" material. They mark the tanks with the date they're put in.

This real world stuff suks... I know exactly where fishmaven is coming from.
I would like to see / own a fish emporium that went only by the book...just to see if it could be done...Profitably...

Crystal clear tanks just the right size for the fish w/individual filters & Nets, in a store the size of a wally world, water storage/aging system, fresh healthy fish stock, all truely useful care products known to mankind. Computerized water testing done instantly by Abbs (a real scientist that cares) from NCIS, with all of the RIGHT equipment. Enough Knowledgeable energetic dedicated tireless saleried staff with complimentary store logo emblazened shirts to help every customer, and double doors on the front of the store so all of the customers (that will take your every word as gospel and never do anything without seeking this word first) who with pockets brimming with cash won't have to wait to get in... Shhh... don't wake me I like this world.

Pet Care Warehouse has a 2 1/2 gallon tank with an Elite Hush 5 Power Filter and gravel in little cups like bettas come in that is precultured. I don't know if the bacteria is fed or not, but I believe they would feed them.
Can fish live in a tank where the filter isn't maintained as long as the bio wheel on the filter turns? they never maintain the filters there and even though they overflow constantly around the tube, they seem to not care as long as the bio wheel spins. I have even seen them fix a filter where the bio wheel stops, but they don't change the cartridge, they either lift the cartridge slightly or reset the bio wheel on the hooks on the filter.

If they take such poor care of they're tanks, what makes you think they feed bacteria in cups of gravel...
If there are only enough fish in the tank to support the bacteria in the filter/on the bio-wheel/ stuck on everything in the tank then the answer is yes.
Lifting the cartridge just lets water bypass under it, so more flow pushes the bio-wheel faster.

So it won't hurt if I do mine that way and change them about every 3-6 months like them? I can let it go as long as the BIO-Wheel spins?

3 neons in a 55g planted tank maybe.
Bio-wheels can get a slime agae on them and become non-productive.

P.S. We are getting extra time on google's new keyhole satilite to watch you to make sure your fish are treated properly.
I probably wouldn't have trusted you anymore if you told me that it was fine. I believe in changing my cartridges monthly to every other month (when it overflows around the tube).

I know it's difficult but buy the time they are overflowing they probably haven't been working for days or a week. They should be changes when the flow starts to lessen.
I think I can safely say that anyone that knows about fishkeeping ever said it was cheap (glad my wife doesn't read these). That's one of the benifits of a W/D. Even on a small tank. I have had them on 10g.

I just got the Millennium 2000 that I have wanted for ever and I love it already but the cartridges for it are $3.99 for 1. Can I rinse them off and reuse them until they fall apart?
Yes, just rinse them in used tank water after a water change. Just enough to knock off the junk. When you finally get one thats wearing out, you could try remaking it with quilting material, really cheap.
