during the 2 years that it has serviced my aquarium, i had 0-10ppm nitrates. Before seting this up, nitrates were constantly at 20-40ppm.
If you're hesitant to build such a setup, Im sure just having a deep (4") sand/gravel bed in your tank would work just as well.
