The FX5 is easily the most popular canister on this forum and definitely a good choice for Oscars. There are also plenty of "Old School Veterans" who'll suggest using a couple of Eheim 2217's and who can blame them. As previously mentioned, a good HOB filter (like the Aquaclear 110) used with a large canister such as the FX5 or one of the big Marineland C-Series (C-360, C-530) or, if you hit the lottery... an Eheim 2078.

Someone previously mentioned buying from Amazon. Good advice. Once you've settled on which filter, compete Big Al's, Drs Foster & Smith and Amazon against each other. Let the best deal win.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

I just set up a 155 (60 x 24 x 25) for some Oscars and Severums. I got a good deal on 2 ML C-530's. Beast of a filter, with little to no bypass. Recommended.

How is the durability on these things? even if they only last a year or two, its worth the cash. A canister is a canister. You can manipulate the media and filtration material any way you want. I may try one of these in the future.

the only problem i had with it is that i could not get it to self prime. other than that it runs great and i haven't had any problems with it i also really like the uv light in it. i have 4 trays of filtration in it 2 trays are bio filtration and 2 trays are mechanical filtration

Canisters are new to me and I feel stupid, cuz they're probably really simple. But let's get this straight, will I have to drill a hole in my tank? Or does it have a pump and intake tube or something? They seem great and I don't mind spending some money on one or two, but as long as I don't have to drill a hole -_-

Oh ok, well that's good. My cousin has an Eheim 2078 pro that he's going to sell to me cheap, he says "it's the best you can get." Is there any truth to that? If I buy it, will that alone work fine for my 125g with only two oscars?

It's a really good filter. Almost 500 gph w no media. I would still have a 2nd or 3rd filter especially since you have 2 messy oscars. How much is he going to sell it to you for?
