ive been planning this tank for over 2 years. now that i have a suply of lumber and a few extra dollars im finally getting started...sorta.

its a plywood tank with an acrylic front. 10ft long x 6ft wide x 3ft tall.

what kind of filtration should i look into. i was thinking somewhere around 15000 gph. but where can i find a pump like that for under $300 if possible. also can anyone tell/show me how to build a sump or filter using 50 gallon barrels?

remember i have barely started this project so please do not flood this with "lets see pix" posts.

yup 6ft wide! so i can have at least a shortnose gar. and a tsn or rtc. or maybe ill go all native with some bluegills and such. it could also turn out to be an awesome african tank...im not really sure what im puttin in it, as you can tell, but i wanna keep my options open so i went wide instead of tall, plus tall = more $ for acrylic piece.

i was thinking of having 3 or more 50 gal. barrels run into each other somehow, like the first being the actual filter part then the next one being bio and charcoal and the next being a wet/dry. is it possible? ive always done HOBs and internal.

you can stack like 3 50 gallon tubs.first filter media then 2nd lava rocks then 3rd bio balls then maybe filter media again.have gravity pull water back down into the tank or let it fall into the tank.im not the expert at huge diy filters

Aquatic-eco supplies should have everything you need including paints. I would also look at pool supplies as well as pond supply stores.

LETS SEE PIX!!! :D Well, just keep a camera handy. Can we at least see the pile of wood you will be using. How about a pile of the cash too…and as you buy stuff we can see the pile of cash shrink. Kinda like a before and after but continuous. Just a thought.

For a pump, you are looking for a swimming pool pump. At 15000 gph, you are looking in the ball park of $6000. Actually a 15hp Purex pump is $6109.96, but who is counting? A 3hp can be had for just over a thousand dollars if you want to skimp, but your fish will hate you for it.

Ok, I had fun doing that. Here is a little tidbit of information: The world will not end if you do not have 10 turnovers per hour. Also, you are really building a pond rather than a fish tank…so that is permission to break all of the fish tank rules and take care of your ‘pond’ like a…well…like a pond. A 1hp pump is more than enough to take care of your 1300 gallons. My pool has a 1hp and it is 18000 gallons. My pool also doubled as a goldfish pond for about four years. There is good news in all of this…a 1hp pump can be had for $170 (new) if you look in the right places. Don’t rule out a used pump as long as it is not cast iron. Major repairs are cheaper than a new pump. Do not use a shallow well pump either (wrong impellers).

55g barrels will be excellent for filtration. What I did was to put my wet/dry offline because it has a different flow rate. Use one barrel for your wet/dry, another barrel for denitration, one barrel for mechanical filtration (or use a swimming pool cartridge filter), and one barrel buried in the ground to act as a surge tank. The filter barrels would drain to the surge tank and the pump would return the water from there. If you use a pool filter, it should go on the return side of the pump because it will flow much better under pressure.

thanx 4 the help.

so...what should i put in it? and taking pix of the money going away may make me imotionally unstable, so its prolly not a good idea...lol. ill get pix of wood though...lol.

I was just kidding about the pic of the wood. Everyone wants pictures and I was left to my own devices.

If you were local, I'd help you out with your equipment. I can post pics of some of the projects that I did. I made a wet/dry using a five gallon bucket for $0 out of pocket (stuff from other projects). You can repeat it on a bigger scale. Srounging stuff over time will also help put big equipment together for low dollars.
