i dont know of any local fish stores in my area, but petco is right down the road. will they have all the filters mentioned above??

also, if i were to make a sump out of a 10gallon tank, would that work??

Petco were i live usually has the ac110s and mariland canister there. but i wouldnt waste the money buying filters from petco. The only time i do something like that is when a filter brakes and i need one emidietly. There are tons of places online to buy for way less. Ebay is a good place to start alot of vendors on there. And places like www.drfostersmith.com I just allways figure out what i want and google cheapest places to get them. Like i said before and some one else mentioned the ac110's cant beet those filter with any other hob filters in my opinion they are basically a sump, or wet dry, or canister material just as a hang on tank filter. The only problem i have ever had with them is if you have sand as a substrate they get clogged easy. But so do most hob filters. But if you go the canister route it is allso hard to beet a rena filstar xp3 for mid grade canisters. Good baskets dont leak you have to prime them but isnt a big deal and i had a couple running for a few years with no problems. And you can get brand new ones on line for 80 or 90 bucks if you shop around maybe even less. And i would say that a fx5 is way to much for a 55. I am over filter all my tanks allways but it is more of a issue of being a crazy flow rate in the tank more then any things else. And even cascage makes some reasonable priced canisters but in my opinion they such. But that is just my opinion

I hope you first understand that a single Oscar will outgrow a 55 gallon quickly. Unless you plan on getting a much larger tank, I would save his fish by not taking them and finding them another home. I know your intentions are good, but you will need a new tank and filter so quickly why bother? If the fish are small and you can house them until you buy a larger tank or find someone with a larger tank, on a 55g I would use a Aquaclear 110 filter and change 40% of the water twice a week with 2 Oscars and a catfish. That is a lot of poop. The fish will be stunted if they are left in that 55g. You already should be thinking about a larger tank just because you are thinking about getting the fish.

Drill the tank and overflow ~ $60
Used 20 gallon ~ $10
Pipes ~ $20 ish
Pump ~ $100
Cement/glue/pot scrubbies ~ $10

Total for a sump ~ (about) $200, probably less.

Leaving you $50 for other stuff you might need....

i could just build my own overflow couldnt i?? and my dad has experience with cutting glass. idk right now im going away to college and my dads going to have to deal with it....and he dosnt like that.

so im trying to get it so that he really only has to clean the tank, do some water changes, and feed them. thats manageable for him lol

Yup, an overflow would work, as long as it's setup properly (don't want water all over the floor). I just prefer drilled tanks with a durso.

If it's a maintenance is the issue, a sump will last months with little to no work (only have to change filter socks). They can also have a much larger surface area for BB than a canister can.
