Filtration for 598 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 wet/dry filter will do the works on it. just get something like for a 300 gal capacity each and a large pump for both of them. you don't really need 2 pumps one nice and reliable powerful pump with do the trick. saving money doesn't mean your not going to have a good filter it only means you're thinking wisely and investing properly on a long term hobby that wouldn't end up hurting your pocket in the long run. :)

How the hell would you do a water change on something that big!

Bye the way congrats I would love to have something that big someday.

How do you build something like that, glass silicone ext.

3 seperate wet/dry would not work well unless they were conected together because if one of the pumps stopped running the overflow would not and the one wet/dry would overflow and flood everywhere. one giant sump would be better imo.

ouch! good catch! reading this thread I hasn't thought of that problem until you mentioned it. none of us need a flood.

only other point I think needs to be mentioned is to consider not having a single pump. have multiple pumps so that if a single one goes out you still have some circulation and filtration. try to eliminate all single point of failures.

That is why I asked the experts here. I never thought of those two things. Thanks my wife would have killed me if I were to flood her house.

I was thinking of doing my sump on the sides like you guys have suggested, but When talking with one of my co workers, he suggested that you split your return and have them come in from ether side causing a good wrap around flow with no dead areas and have the drain down the center of the tank and have one sump! keep it simple, one sump goes down you dont blow the other 2 or three when the water from one flows to the downed one.

I have two large home made tanks 350 & 700gal. I filter both of them with bead filters made for koi ponds. They have the turnover rate and the ability to carry a large fish load. They work great and maintenance is a breeze.

personally I like having more than one filter smaller systems than having one big system. in case one system fails, the other sytems still work and keep things stable for you, while you replace/correct the malfunctioning system.

I agree and on my17,000gal koi pond I run two systems. But given that even one bead filter is overkill on a aquarium just running it with two small pumps will give you your built in safety factor
