filtration for 60g and solo red devil

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep my RD in a 90gal w/ external canister filter (Cascade 1500). I also run two current makers that are normally used in S/W setups. My RD is two years old, 10-11". Very happy fish. As messy as he is, my chemistry is always good. Even if some food is not devoured.:D

How often are you guys doing water changes? My nitrates build up fast! Thinking about trying some plants in there. I do 50% 3 times a week and Id still like it to be lower.

How low is lower?? I do 50% once per week on a 75gal with a 11-12" rose queen and my nitrates don't go above 20ppm. Maybe you have nitrates in your water or you are overfeeding a bit?

Burt:)

Do 1 100% waterchange one day a week

Also 40 bucks for a AC110!!! thats a score right there, niiiiiice bery nice

My tapwater comes out at zero nitrates but I cant seem to get below 60!! Now that ive though about it though Im going to check my filters for dead things when I get home.

That is not a good idea.

for one fish are sensitive to temp change and I highly doubt you get the temp exactly right every time.

secondly the water chemistry will definitely be different and doing 100% changes leaves no original water to help reduce the shock of the change

third, its a waste of water...100% water changes should never be needed unless you are WAY overstock which is a whole nother problem

and lastly when you change out all the water you mini cycle every week! just think about it...you bio has nothing to sustain its self so it dies off and then has to regenerate as the bioload increases again. This almost guarantees small ammonia and nitrite spikes which are much worse for fish than nitrates

smaller water changes are ment to try to keep things close to constant...100% changes keep a tank cycling forever.

Drain about 75% of the water, fill it up, condition n what not. Do the same thing right after that.

Please dont...figure out the problem and fix it the right way
