How often are you guys doing water changes? My nitrates build up fast! Thinking about trying some plants in there. I do 50% 3 times a week and Id still like it to be lower.

Sounds like overfeeding to me. Try cutting back to half for a a few weeks and I bet you will be surprised at how much your nitrates go down and how healthy your fish remains

Cleaned half of my filter media and did another water change - 30%. I'll wait a couple of days and clean out the other media. Im thinking I let these go too long without a good cleaning. As for over feeding I dont think thats it because I actually cut back in the last couple weeks to get him to eat new foods. He was a very picky eater and would only eat one type of pellet so Ive been skipping feedings for a couple days and then trying new stuff. Seems to be working so there are now 3 foods he'll eat that arent alive.
