Turtles are filthy, I kept 3 2'' turtles in a 10 gal for a couple weeks, without a filter, doing water changes every other day.

YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE THE STENCH!!!!

seriously it was gross, I ended up setting a filter up, took care of the problem. Maybe they were of swimming in their own feces, but I couldnt live with that thing in my house, it was too gross.

I just had my female RES in a container for 40 hours without a filter due to my male attacking her. I know have her set up in a 40 gallon breeder (not great I know, but she is only like 4 inches long or so). When she was in the container there was no filter. It was nasty. She survived yes, but it was gross in my mind and smelt terrible. She was also not very active in the container at all and did not eat. Now she is in the 40 gallon breeder with a filter and she is eating a ton and swimming a lot. So yes, this turtle likes filters I would say and so do I haha

Shouldnt even be a question. Why would you want your turtle sitting in and drinking ammonia levels that would make a fish's head spin?

My snapper and 2 painted turtles all have filtration going on. Snapper is special, he has a 800gph cartridge filter for mech in his tank, water is CRYSTAL clear!:D

I have a 55 with 2 Red Ear Sliders. I keep about 4" of water in the tank with a couple of places for them to crawl out and "sun" themselves under the heat lamps. I use a simple in tank filter that cost around $12 at Petsmart. I have a small plastic butter tub full of rocks under the filter discharge to quiet down the waterfall sound. I do weekly 100% water changes (maybe not quite 100%, I use my Python and draw the water down until I lose suction). I use Prime when I refill it.

My tank is sparkling clean, no odor at all and the turtles seem happy.

Since I am not worried about bio, I rinse off the filter cartridge each week as well. Since there's only around 10-15 gallon of water in the tank, the small filter does a great job filtering particulates.

Good luck!

A filter is HIGHLY recommended. if you don't have one, then you'll need to do a TON of wc! Filters will keep the tank smelling better, looking better, and your turtles will be healthier. Having a filter will cut down on maitnence time.

turtle poop is nasty, their eating behavior is messy, they dig, all of these characteristics make the water very dirty. You either siphon the tank every 3 days and do a 50% water change or get good filter. without a good filter, maintaining good water for a full grown turtle in a large tank would be a HUGE waste of time and a lot of unpleasantness. that is why a filter is vital for a turtle setup. I have owned two RES for almost 2 years and I have learned my lesson.

Fully agree with that. My turtles are much more active with filters than without.
It is good to know that lots of people agree with me that filters are necessary.
