I want to know how the majority of people's tanks i see on here are so clear and how the water stays that way?

I have a 155g rena x3 & had a mag 330 on there and even still it does not look pristine like the majority of tanks I see on here, am I doing something wrong?sometimes I wonder if it's my background or the tint on the tank? I dont know but I would like some info / suggestions?

also is it worth having a under gravel filter on tanks this size? some say yes some say theres no point,

x3? do you mean xp3? if so, that is not near enough filtration. even with the magnum on there at the same time

magnum should be putting out about 175-200gph (rated at 350, with no media)
xp3 should be doing about the same as well, depending on how the media is setup.

So that puts you at around 350-400gph. which basically means your tank is capable of being filtered about 2 to 2 1/2 times an hour. Most people reccomend at least 5x an hour! of course, that all depends on what you have in it.

i have about the same amount of gph on my 75g and i ordered an fx5(925gph rated, 5-600gph with media) to replace my setup. which should put me at about 8x an hour.

Now, you have a lot of options on what to do. A cheap/effective, easy way is the fx5 (200 shipped on ebay). i would add the fx5 and keep the xp3 on there, and keep the magnum as backup. this should put you at around 800gph, a little over 5x. You could keep the magnum on it, but running 3 canisters can start looking a little cluttery. but it really doesnt matter.

have you tested your water? how are you doing your water changes and how often?

what do you have in the tank? what do you plan to have?

all of this depends on a solution to your problem.

btw- nice car! i have a 2000 SS(catfish). im on ls1.com and ls1tech. its nice to see other muscle car owners on here!

I have never had a tank this large, it was given to me, I went with the suggestion from tropical world of pets,

I do a 25% water change once a week, and clean out the tank (excess waste / whatever needs to be done twice a week depening on what needs done

stock = 2 breeding GT's, 2 pike, 2 jag's, 1 zebra, 1 jewel, albino pleco, Bristol nose pleco,

I have had them in there since june \ july

on the test shows water is a little hard ....

thanks for the props on the car 15g invested in past 2 years used to be on F.A.S.T but now I am banned (used to be event cordinator there)

whats the deal on the undergravel filter? worth it?

nah, the undergravel fliters have there place. but i would never reccomend one, especially with cichlids. ugfs flow through the path of least resistance. cichlds like to dig up the substrate on top of it, basically making it useless.

i suggest you start doing 50% water changes twice a week until you get it cleared up. im doing 50% every other day on my new 75g because of the algae bloom i got since its a new tank and its helping a lot.

for some reasons most people at fish stores dont know much.(at least in my experience). and for some reason, most filters are rated for tanks they arent even half enough good for. thats mostly to do with stocking level as well.

about how big are all of your fish? what are you using to feed? and how often are you feeding?

the alge is not a problem the water is clear just not clear like I see pics of peoples tanks on here not pristine clear,

they eat bloodworms, shrip pellets, regular pellets, veggies, roasies, they love roasies

blood worms are treats every other day, pellets 2x day mixed with shrimp pellets, veggies on sunday and roasies I put 25 in the tank they last 2 hours tops and they get those every couple of weeks when the GT's are not breeding and the babies have been removed...

albino pleco is 12 in
bristol nose 6.5 in
jewel 5 in
male GT 8in
female GT 6 in
male pike 10 in
female pike 8 in
male jag 7 in
female jag 5 in
zebra 5 in

The tank is too small for that many fish once they are full grown. When the male jag hits 10 or 12 inches or pairs up with that female all hell will break loose. Jags are fanatic parents they will destroy your other inhabitants.

What do you mean by not clear? Does the water look cloudy? How long has this tank been set up?
You say the test shows the water a little hard, but do you test for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH?
