I am new to planted aquarium but I want to make my new 120g tank into a planted aquarium. It is not set-up yet but I have a wet-dry system. Does anyone else have a planted aquarium with a wet-dry? Also are there any other filtration systems that will work well with my peacock bass and my plants? And is an over flow ok to use with plants?

if its ur first time i highly recommend starting small and working ur way up to the 120. depending on what u want to achieve, it may be extremely expansive.. but for sure a lot more difficult.

wet-drys are not typical what u want to use in a planted tank due to the high amount of oxygenation that their well known for. all the oxygenation will deplete the levels of Co2 in the tank. in order to preform photosynthesis, plants take in Co2 and then exhaust oxygen. basically, u would need to supplement co2 by using a pressurized Co2 set up...

canister filters are the best for planted tanks IMO.. however i was very successful will a single ac 20 (HOB) on my 15 gallon set up.

15 gallon set up:

yep! like he said u want a canister but i also had good luck with a hob

Your wet/dry will be fine if you do not opt to go the co2 route. You can have quite a nice planted tank without co2 so don't feel like you have to have it. I have had a planted tank in the past with a wet/dry filter and had great success only dosing liquid ferts (seachem.)

how big was the tank?

what plants were u growing?

can we see some pictures, please?

This tank is not currently set up; I am in the middle of moving. However, it is a 70 gallon tank with a built in 20 gallon wet/dry. When it was stocked it had: Amazon Swords, Java Ferns, Java Moss, Riccia, and Crypts. I will be doing a build thread with this tank when I get moved in. :D

nice i look forward to it. were u using Seachem Excel? (Flourish Excel)

I am not really looking for an over grown tank. I just want to have a easy to keep plant plants and for them to grow. I do not want a CO2 set-up. Is possible for me to do this with my wet-dry and overflow? or will that cause my CO2 level to be too low?

having few plants with little needs will be simple.. so ur good to go!!!

just make sure u choose low light plants, they generally do not need Co2 supplementation.

if u choose a sword type plant (Echinodorus), keep in mind they are heavy root feeders and ideally should have enriched substrate and/or roots tabs.
