mainly the backflow over the filter tube when there is too much media or clogged up media, the 60 isn't whisper quiet, otherwise i think they're great, lasts forever

My opinion that we must remeber in the commercial world of this essential accessory called filtration is WE are the cash cow :) if A commercial company builds it they want it to last but not too long...... They do not make money on parts that do not get bought over and over..

The best thing i've found is my DIY wet dry i can replace it 3 times for the price of a commercially manufactured product its equal. Of course my view on DIY now is be prepared to do allot of work:) And thats also the PRo because once you get it done.. You know it's gonna last and last and last.. I hate spcace takers that aren't for fish hiding or looks! My heaters are now hiddin, my system only has one syphon on one side . Instead of to pipes hangin in my tank...

Plus i can place it closer to the wall than i can with hob's with the tank size most of us have we have to get hob's that are any where form 6 to 8" at the top now my tank sits inside of 3" from the wall!!!

My wet/dry is easy to maintain :) I just pull out the drawer and vualla i can change everything !! Expected problems= pump failure hhhhmmmm ok thats simple LOL i just get a new one 50.00 right to my door! Too much pump for the syphon add bigger piping for 3.00 total. Too much syphon for the pump-- add a ball joint cut off on the syphon cut off till the pump keeps up :) And filters ten times better than anyfilter system i've owned that cost similar!! and my 150 i would have to replace at least 80.00 everytime something went out :) so I save 30.00 Yea!!

More people are selling their pumps than replacing them, so i should be good and feel i have made an awesome investment in the building of my wet/dry:) Of course i have an emp 400 on my 55:) and some whispers on my other tanks.. No probs yet..

I'm a DIY'er and LIKE it!! :) Any way theres my 2 cents LOL

just a note on the emporers. you have to CLEAN THEM!!!!! if the biowheels are sticking clean the bearing surface or the spray bars. they don't clean themselves and any filter will malfunction if not maintained.

whispers suck and i hate them!

Do you mind showing us how to make one out of say, an old fish tank or plastic tubs?
(Start a new thread if its too much a derail of this one?)

I suck at making stuff:)
And the price quoted for some wet/dry is kinda ridiculous for what it is.
Here is one of mine, its basically a 75 with 3 holes in it.

I'm making a plywood one that I'll have a thread on soon:)

I can't see it? The 75 with the three holes I meant.

Will be building a monster tank in the near future, pretty good idea on how to go about it, just not sure on how to build the filter.

Why do you think they suck?

My Whisper has been running great for almost 9 months without having ti clean the WonderTube nor the impeller. I replace the cartridge monthly, but you are supposed to anyways. People say they love Marineland and Aquaria, but did they know that MARINELAND AND AQUARIA MAKE WHISPER!!!?? I can prove it if you want.

I do understand that different people have different luck with different filters, but me, my 2 neighbors, and my grandma have all used a Whisper for a very long time. My grandma's was bought in the early 80s. Does the Willinger Brothers Model 3 ring a bell to anyone who has been fishkeeping since then? That is a long time. You guys can stick to what you want, but I will always trust Whisper. I tried a Penguin and an AquaTech, and neither kept my tank as clean as a Whisper half the size of them. I can't make people use them, but I wish I could because they are so great. They are the #1 selling power filter in the US. Tetra is a great brand and I love the Whisper filters, Whisper air pumps, and Whisper heaters.
