Final catfish for my 75 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You are referring to the AUSD right or are you talking about the decorus or nigrita? (It isn't a true syno if you are talking about the AUSD) well regardless I like all the synos (so much personality :)) and while you are right I can't predict the future I can almost guarantee you that I will still have the tank then. I plan on going to college within half an hour of my house so I will still be able to take care of it then. Once I get my own place i will find some way to move it there as weep as the fish and the water wothout I cycling (that's gonna take some doing but I'll find a way).

This is the synodontis i was thinking about getting from my LFS. Very beautiful "gold" synodontis nigrita. I think they get 5 or 6 inches is all. $40 for a 2.5 or 3 inch fish but worth it for that color. Is there anything I should know about them though such as genetic instability from looking like that?

Synodontis are very territorial and aggressive. It will most likely fight with your Raphael catfish.

Oh well then, I guess that rules out synos. So then my options are:

AUSD 7" (12" max)
Pimelodus Blochii 7" (12" max)
Gueldiella eques 10" (12" max)

Or, Furiousfish if you didn't see my earlier post I did give specifications as to what I am looking for if you would like to suggest a fish.

How can they be super aggressive with those sucker mouths?? Syno will work in your tank. The blochii can be aggressive too but only if the other fish try to cuddle with it. And my blochii looks cramped in my 70g so I am upgrading to a 100-150 once my cars paid off by the summer time. So I would vote 1 syno nigrita or other synos/ whatever ausd means also.

AUSD = Asian Upside Down Catfish (Mystus leucophasis)

Alright this is getting to be more of a debate than a decision at this point so here's what I'm gonna do: I'll make a list of fish that from reading this I think would work. Knowing myself well I will probably not make my final decision until the guy at my LFS is holding the bag asking me what I want :). These are fish my LFS has now that I think will work. Just say yes if you think these will all work (only getting one) and I'll be prepared:
List:
AUSD (mystus leucophasis)
Decorus cat (synodontis decorus)
Gold Nigrita Cat (synodontis nigrita)
Four line (Pimelodus blochii)
Horsehead (Gueldiella eques)

I have had my 75 gallon tank setup for the past month and it finished cycling a week and a half ago. The fish in it as of now include 6 giant danios, 1 rainbow shark, 1 striped raphael. The other fish that will be added in about two weeks include a severum, a convict cichlid (probably), and a redhead geophagus (again probably). I will also be adding one last catfish in the 7-12 inch range but anybody in the forum that knows me knows that I can't make up my mind :). I have it narrowed down to a few (I guess you could say "few" fish). The other fish I would like but can only have one include:

Four line pimelodus Pimelodus blochii http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=653
horsehead pimelodus. Goeldiella eques http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=727
synodontis decorus. Synodontis decorus http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=84
synodontis nigrita (gold). Synodontis nigrita http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=89
asian USD catfish. Mystus leucophasis http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=21

Which one do you guys think would go best in my 75 with the fish listed above. Temperature is 76 F and pH is 7.6.

My LFS has all of these readily available.

Asian used catfish is my favourite fish ever, I have 2 10" males right now in a 55 but will be put in a 240 gallon in the next month. They will eat anything and everything just saying

Oh well then, I guess that rules out synos...

??? Are you going by who had the last word in your decision making? That'd be very unfortunate for you. You will never make a decision or a prudent one anyway. Do you think you are talking to only experts here? Everyone's an expert? Think again. For every expert here (like in any field or forum) there are 10-100-1000 ignorant ones, me included.

IMHO: Never believe anyone's word. Not mine, not FuriousFish's, not Rutinis's, no one's because you don't know any of us (yet)! If people point you in the DIFFERENT directions, you can first, figure out who to believe and second, hit "the books, the net" to see who is right or wrong or what.

Look at it that way: 10 ignorant people like me will steer you in one direction and then one real expert or even an ichthyologist comes in and says different. You will brush off the expert's opinion as the minority opinion whilst it is the only correct one. So, until you know who to trust more, you have to figure out who gives the more correct info and the only way to do it is by doing research YOURSELF. If you care, of course... If you look for an easy way out, there is none for a beginner forum participant.

You can very simply start by testing this all-encompassing, wide-sweeping, and absolute statement "Synodontis are very territorial and aggressive." or at least ask for it to be explained.

Well synodontis in my personal experiance have pushed around my senegal bichirs. I am speaking strictly from My personal experiance. Other people may and WILL have different experiances. But in mine, while synodontis do not really hurt other fish they try to push them around and are territorial (especially to each other)! By the way, VERY WELL PUT!
