Final Tank Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
And a side note, John, it looks like you won. lol

Yeah...yeah, it kinda does, doesn't it? :headbang2

But look at the bright side. You lasted at least a week, maybe a bit more? I expected three days, tops. So from that perspective...well, it's not like you won...but you didn't lose quite as fast, so...okay, yeah, you lost.

Okay, y'all. I have some bittersweet news. This will be the final update I give on this tank as a fish tank.

You read that right; the final update on this tank as a fish tank. Why am I doing this? The truth is, I've found it increasingly difficult to keep up with the maintenance and care required to keep the fish happy and healthy. As I've mentioned in the 10-gallon tank thread, I'm about to start school and work, and in the little free time I will have, I will want to hang out with friends and work out. I don't want to keep devoting time and money to the fishkeeping hobby right now; I've felt guilty over the past few months because I haven't been able to provide the care I would like to give the tank, and the fish deserve better. So, I will take them to the fish store this weekend and ask the senior fish salesman (who I know) to ensure they go to appropriate homes.

Does this mean that I'll be quitting fish-keeping forever and leaving MFK? No to both. I will still hang out here (if that's ok with y'all) on MFK, and I have plans for future fishkeeping. I'm still passionate about the hobby, but just for now, I can't manage this size of tank. I hope to set up another tank or two and begin fresh in 4-5 years (maybe longer, depending on what kind of schooling I will do). I plan on doing a crap ton of research in this break so I can go bigger, and better, and fix all the things I wanted to do with this tank but couldn't. In short, I will pick up the hobby again, but for now, take a temporary break.

I said above that I'm not keeping the tank as a fish tank. So, what am I doing with it? I'm going to convert it into an oversized hamster paradise. I will devote the tank to my dwarf hamster, Pearl; I've believed for a long time that she needs a bigger home than the one she is in now (although she is comfortable in it), and I want to give her something much better. I will not get rid of the tank itself, just the inhabitants, decor, etc.

I shall conclude by saying thank you to those who have helped and supported me throughout my short trip back into the fishkeeping hobby. I've appreciated the advice and everything y'all have given and done for me over the past couple of months. In a few weeks, I will post a new thread with updates regarding the new chapter of the tank.

If you would be so kind, mods, could you please close this thread? Thank you!
That's truly heartbreaking for a fellow fishkeeper like me. I always said to myself that life won't come in the way of my precious hobby, but it seems that's not the case for everyone. Even you short break(4-5 years) seems like decades to me. I have stayed on this website for a little over a year and during my time researching on it, I have found that a lot of determined and successful members just left the hobby, with C Chicxulub being a recent example. You not posting regularly was bugging me for a while and now I know why. Let's hope you come back in the hobby stronger than ever. BTW you better stay on this site or otherwise I will have a hard time managing @jjohnw and esoxlucius esoxlucius . Their freak show is already too much to bear lol.

No, S SilverArowanaBoi , this isn't a challenge. I can understand the necessity to sometimes take a break from extreme involvement in...well, anything, really. Life circumstances change. I've been down to a single tank a couple of times throughout my life. I didn't really consider myself a serious aquarist at those times, just a guy with a fishtank.

I'm not trying to talk you into or out of any decisions, but I'll just throw this out there: a single tank of decent size, properly set-up and with some thought and planning put into the logistics of water changes, filtration, etc. can be very, very simple to maintain with a minimal investment of time per week. The key is setting it up correctly, making sure the system works...and then leaving it alone. I don't mean neglecting maintenance, either; I mean not constantly changing the substrate or re-scaping or adding/removing fish or...well, basically, doing all the stuff you have been doing. Just reading some of your posts is exhausting; I'd want a break too if I were doing all that stuff...but a stable, mature tank practically runs itself as long as you let it be.

I've seen a lot of aquarists who think they need a break...and divest themselves of all their tanks and gear...and expect/plan/dream that they will be back in a year, or 5 years...and the next thing you know, they have grandkids and arthritis and a pension and still no fishtanks!

Never forget that wonderful saying: There are three types of people in the world; those who make things happen...those who watch things happen...and those who wonder what happened. You ain't gonna live forever. :)

S SilverArowanaBoi Drop out of school. It will be well worth it in the long run.

What is that new avatar you have got?

I wish, but right now, that is not my decision. The avatar is a ghost from the article that abominus abominus posted below (or above idk) lol.

I appreciate the advice, but knowing my current self, I will keep changing things till no end (as you jokingly point out without fail 😆). Honestly, I'm exhausted by my posts sometimes, too. However, the reasons I mentioned above were not the only reasons behind the conversion; there are a lot more personal reasons that I'd rather not elaborate on here.

I know the article is ridiculous, hence why I chose the picture as my pfp. I mean, seriously, a tactic to avoid ghosts is "ghosting them?" I'm sorry, but that's just a bunch of :bs:. The only tactic I use to prevent ghosts is not believing in them. :hitting:

I really appreciate the kind words, abominus abominus . Don't worry; I won't be leaving the site anytime soon. Someone has to keep John and Esox from destroying the world as we know it. 🤣 Plus, there is still so much I can learn from this group. The advice here is often much better than that on most fishkeeping websites.

Hey...we're not destroying it...we're trying to hold it together to keep it from becoming (perish the thought...) as you see it...:)

Although I find myself taking on much of the burden alone. esoxlucius esoxlucius , you'd better start pulling your weight! :)
