Finally A Legal Asian Arowana in the USA

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It was the concensus of a panel of conservationists and ichthyologists that used markers in mitochondrial DNA to determine genetic links between S. formosus and the phenotype species. The original plan to separate the farm-developed phenotypes was presented by parties with interests in the aro farming industries.

The original list included 4 phenotypes. The batik (S. inscriptus) makes the list 5 since 2012.

Oddball

Thanks! I was correct. I forgot about the snake pattern Asian Arrowana from Myanmar. There is a similar pattern on Scleropages jardini Arowanas although that phenotype is exceedingly rare to locate.

There is a good shot a legalization. If some of these species are described in the nomenclature as separate species and are listed by the IUCN Red List as non endangered species. They could be seen as legal imports to the USA. CITES has just updated the export Quotas for Madagascar Chameleons (Genera Brookesia, Calumma and Furcifer) after almost 20 years of nothing with 22 new species for export including export to the USA. If conservation groups in Asia conserve habitat or help list some types of Asian Arowanas into there own species that are not listed as endangered with extinction (possibly Red Tail Goldens and Green Asian Arowanas). There is a good chance they could become legal. However that take effort from groups on both sides of the pond! Try not to have a wet dream by the title of my thread.

Cheers

Well theres some hope. Please sign the petition to legalize Asian Arowanas in the U.S. The link is http://wh.gov/lVNqy please support it!

Thanks for posting on my thread!

I am busy with many other things, especially with my internship of restoration of endangered Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Steelhead Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) habitat in Northern California. However US legal and habitat conservation of Asian Arowana's is something I want to continue to make progress towards. I have managed preliminary conversations with a US Aquatic Conservation/Consulting group that is actively working in the Mekong River. They are mostly concerned with others aquatic fish species other than Asian Arowanas. However they were interested in the preliminary information I showed them. I have had talks and shown literature to a UC Davis professor and he was interested as well.

Best Regards

I finally got a legal Asian Arowana here in the USA. This wood carving my parents brought back from their holiday vacation from Cambodia. There were other carvings that were over three feet long however they had no clue how to ship the carvings back to the USA. I think this carving could be some kind of Red Arowana. It is one of my favorite memento's:grinno:.

To be honest it looks more like a beta with the size of the dorsal and anal fins
