Finally got my fish for my new 55g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could always throw a slower shiny fish in there for your JD to target some aggression. Silver dollars work well

The tank isn't even fully cycled yet so adding more fish at the juncture isn't the most viable soultion, aside from the fact that silver dollars get a little big for a 55 gallon tank. There are other tetras better suited for the job in this instance but now is not the time. I've owned JD's that were very cryptic and others that were more out in the open, if it comes out to eat I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep an eye on your water parameters and you should be fine. If the fish stops eating that's a different story but otherwise let it be for now.

x2. I have a half dozen SD's in my 300 and they spaz out and smash into the tank walls during water changes and are all around 4". Too big for a 55 IMO. Test kit, water changes and either get some seeded media from a friend or your lfs for your filter. You will have a pretty big ammonia spike soon if you haven't already. I've also used Seachem "Stability" with very good results in new systems.

Went to a different fish shop today and took some items out and added some items to make bigger caves for my fish. I also got a deal on some new fish. I know I might have overstocked this tank now but I was offered a 65g tank for 50 bucks today and bought that one along with the tank I have now. I will keep them in my current tank while I properly cycle my new one after I receive it. I did a water test today ph=7.5, nitrite=0 nitrate=20 and hardness or something was at 140-180. I changed about 10g and cleaned the gravel. Are these levels pretty good so far? I've noticed the new parrot that is a lighter color is now in a cave with one of the orange ones. All my jd's and new firemouths pretty much stay together. New video of some of them and the new decorations.

change more water. I would do at least 50% if not 60%. if your readings are correct it sounds like you have cycled your tank. you didn't mention your ammonia levels however. try to keep your nitrate at or below 5ppm. as your stock grows you will probably need to do weekly water changes of 30-50%. your ph and hardness will not be of great concern to you as long as they remain consistent. nitrite at 0 is a big A+.it should always stay there now or you will know you have a problem. watch for a spike in ammonia and nitrite now as you have added more fish your bacteria may not be able to instantly handle the increase in bioload. I would hold off on any new stock for awhile. Good luck.
