Hey spinal if your close to Buffalo theres a store not far from the border where i got my festae, they always have them. I think someone who works there breeds them.

Thats a confirmed festae (at least according the the guys on here) at the same size

Notice a couple differences, the "eye" patch on the tail of yours is larger then on mine. Its also orientated to the top vs going the whole way.

Im even more of a noob to amphs, i couldnt tell you the difference of a baby rd to midas.. but ive been looking into CA/SA a lot lately and IMO they seem like uropthalmus or mayan cichlid. Not positive though

What local place did you pick yours up at??

42 aquatics in east aurora! The festae are just listed as red terror, there was a bigger one around 3-4 inch, they are w/ the lil jags. No scientific name w/ em and the people that were there when I were there didn't know the difference between a Mayan and a festae so had to double check on here.

6$ and mines already got a good bit of blue on his fins

That's where they came from. Was shocked they even had Jags. I'll have to talk to Jim. I noticed the tank was only labeled for the jags but I heard through the grapevine that the others were "red terrors". I was supposed to go in on the festae with you and saw this price difference. Now I know why lol.

I'll take them back and exchange them for something else I guess :( what a disappointment.

I was looking real close at those, and had my hopes up as well. I asked the staff and they said "probably" flowerhorn. So I came home and checked and couldn't find a festae that looked like those. I too was pretty excited when I thought I had found some. Lots of mayans labelled as festae at BA's.

I took them back last night. They are flowerhorns for sure. Apparently $7/ea but they had sold them to me for 3/$12. FH would explain why they're destroying each other. As if I'd buy 3. Already got one I don't know wth to do with. Thanks for the help all.

The terms red terror/red devil and the like, are nebulous terms that mean either any number of species, or to me nothing (or at best some generic aquarium strain, or hybrid).
Here is a true 2" festae.
Unless the fish is labeled festae, it is probably not.

My wife doesn't want me buying fish that are known to get so large because we both keep fish. She does africans and I do americans, so she hates knowing she wants a nice big tank meanwhile mine NEED a nice big tank haha. And we're not rich.
