I've never used or even seen Poret foam so i'm not sure what it's like.
The jap matting never cloggs it's just not fine enough, i've let it sit for probably 6 weeks at it's longest stretch and it was dirty, but not clogging - clarity from it is good.

I use two layers, what do other people use in their sumps?

I'll be able to tell you in a couple of months! I've never used it before, but the HMF/Hamburgmatten filter seems fairly popular in Europe so I thought I'd give it a go in my sump as I got sick of changing filter socks every three days with my old set up. There's a pic of the sump I'm having built in the thread in my sig, I've made room for up to six 50x50cm sheets of Poret to be used vertically. Initially I was thinking of running a 10ppi, then a couple of 20ppi, then one 30ppi to see how that goes (I've also incorporated a big settling chamber as a pre-filter to hopefully catch most of the coarse waste from the Panaques I'm keeping). I'm thinking of running a small pump on a closed loop with a filter sock after the Poret if I'm not happy with the clarity, or even just a canister with polishing pads.

I'm struggling to source the poret foam in my country but i'm going to contact some of my LFS and see if it's something their able to get in.
 
My dream tank lol :) I'm like half way there :) I have a 600 Gallon with cichlas to but I'm gettin a tigrinus and some leopoldi soon I hope :D
