FINALLY!!!!! My new 125

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, I feel the need to add that I am SO grateful for the idea of putting the egg crate down under the sand first to protect the glass!! Placing all those rocks in the tank was scary enough without having to worry about them hitting the bottom and making me have a REALLY bad day!!!

Okay, so I took a few fellow MFK'ers advice about my tank and since my Nitrate levels were non-existent in my 29g, I went ahead and started using Seachem Stability in my 125 and moved my four Africans to the new tank. Needless to say they are VERY happy fish now. No longer do they hide when I walk up to feed! Thanks for everyone's input and advice on everything!
Also, since I'm just starting out, I know a lot of you probably will think I'm making a mistake with this, but this early on, I don't feel comfortable buying expensive fish from an online or my LFS just yet. Soooo... for right now I'm sticking with the Petsmart fish. Granted these may not be the most exotic, not the brightest colors, but at this point I feel if I jump into buying expensive fish this early in he hobby for me and lose them, it might cause me to get fed up and quit. So for now I'm going to stick with the cheap and common fish for a while. I know eventually I am going to by some from my LFS or online, but I figure it won't kill me to start slow. After all, I got my FIRST tank (29g) 6 months ago, and already I've now jumped up to a 125 with a Wet/Dry, and started cycling a new 30g hex in my living room tonight for the wife!
Now with that being said, since these are 'Petsmart' fish, I can only guess at the true species of what I have for a couple, but I think I'm pretty close. Remember that all of these are less then 3in, and with my yellow zebra being about 2in. I know one of course is a Bumble bee, I'm assuming female since she hasn't turned black yet but it's still early. The Yellow Zebra I mentioned earlier, which seems to turn from yellow to orange sometimes? That's my best guess on that one. He's all yellow, with a very thin black strip on his top fin when it's fully erect. And then I've got 1 VERY dark reddish orange, then another lighter orange colored one. Take from those descriptions as you will.
Anyways, my plan is that since the instructions, and advice I've been given, using the Stability treatment is to treat for 7 days, then check my levels and if all is good, add fish! So I plan on this Thursday being my 7th day of dosing and will check my levels then. With only four 2-3in Cichlids in a 125g with a huge wet/dry underneath, I'm assuming a WC won't be needed yet, but I'll let the tests tell me that. If all goes well, I plan on adding, (all aprox the same size), another 2 Bumblebees, another 2 Yellow Zebras, one more Bright orange one, and three to four Acei Cichlids. I know I should take it slow in adding fish at one time, and with my 29g, I only added 2 at a time to make it easier on the 'load' in the tank. Any suggestions on how many I can add to the 125 at a time?

These aren't the greatest pics, but I know how everyone loves pics here! Coincidentally, there has been NO fighting or territory issues that I've observed, and they (all four) pretty much swim or stay together for the most part in the their new 125g home, where as in their earlier 39g, they hid all the time, and when they were out, they were generally fighting.

Also, I received my 500W heater today in the mail from the same place I got my Wet/Dry from. (Salt-Solutions on Ebay if you're interested and I HIGHLY recommend them!) For about 50 bucks, it's a titanium with a separate thermostat away from the heater itself. I was able to remove both my 150w AND my 300w heaters from the Wet/Dry tank, and with NO noticeable drops in temp! From here on out I'm definitely a firm believer in going with the higher watt heaters!
Next I'm trying to figure out some kind of 'control box' for all my stuff so I can switch individual things off one at a time rather than having to track down which cord is connected to which power strip... Any suggestions on that would be greatly appreciated!

Okay, I finally found the section explaining how to post (or embed) a video here. So here goes. One from a month ago, and then another from last night. Enjoy.

Well, things were going too good....

I've had the tank running for about 2 months now. I finally got my levels right, my fish were happy, and I was planning on adding more this weekend....

Luckily my wife was working from home today and happened to walk by the tank and heard the pump in the sump making noises and checked. Yup, the sump was dry, then she noticed the water on the floor.... I rushed home to find the back lower corner was leaking a good steady stream out and running along the bottom around the tank and soaking all around it. Since it was on the back side lower corner, I know nothing hit it, and this morning it was fine, so it looks like something just 'gave way' I guess. I drained the tank, took water out of the tank and filled the bathtub with it, then threw in a bubbler and a heater. Hopefully they'll last until I get another tank tonight. Unfortunately I know I could get a cheaper one off of Craigs list, but now I'm in a hurry. So it looks like I'm off to Petsmart to get raped.. I'll see what they've got, but I'll probably end up with a 75g until I can figure out how to reseal my 125. The bad part is that my sump would be too big and the flow to strong for a 75g, so it looks like I'm going to have to fork out more on a HOB filter for it too..... Damnit.... Yeah, when I get done tonight, I'm definitely going to be drinking my dinner!!!!!

So, any suggestions on resealing a tank?
