Finally! My orangeheads got busy!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The male is spending half his time on the other side of the tank doing the little sparring dance with the other male, leaving the female to defend the eggs by herself. This leaves them vulnerable when she goes to chase other fish away. Think it might be a good idea to remove the other male? I'm sure he wouldn't mind being in the growout and getting fed 5+ times a day. Did him a lot of good when he was there for a month experiment a while back.

Dumb question... A lot of sand has gotten dropped onto the eggs too. Will this be an issue when they pick up them up or are they able to sift the sand through while holding the eggs?

Hi Dave, this is not a problem. Mostly it seems inadvertent but sometimes it seems as if they do it intentionally. Either way, it always happens to some degree and does not effect them picking up the eggs.

I wouldn't move the other male, if he's keeping the breeding male distracted then that is good and puts less pressure on the breeding female.

Hi.. Just a quick note to say congrats:thumbsup::thumbsup: Mine are still too young for any of those antics but Ed sold me some beautiful fry and they are growing bigger and prettier every day.. Who knows maybe someday we will all be swapping out orangeheads..:ROFL: Or if I can get Peter to part with some hecklii.. well we'll see..
Good luck with them and keep on posting pics:popcorn::popcorn: Sue:D

Damn, I just realized I'll be out of town this weekend. Perfect timing for the fish to have to go two days without food... though I guess by friday she should have picked the eggs up, right? I forgot the timeline since it has been so long...

Dave~

Congrats Man! Same group as mine? (from Tuan)? I am stoked for you buddy, check out the GCCA classifieds, as Durkin is bringing in some nice Geos!

I am stoked for you! Congrats! :headbang2

Derial - You want any Geo sp. "Nieva" fry? I got em coming out of my ears!

Nuthman~

No, these are adults that I got last year. I wouldn't expect our youths to breed for another several months.

I saw Pete's list for the swap. I have nowhere to put them but it's very tempting because he has some uncommon geos. I wish he had photos of all the parents though. I've never seen a good photo of an adult peachface, for instance. Was thinking of just buying up a bunch and selling some orangeheads and growing them out, but now it's looking like I might have to rent another year (layoffs at the gf's firm), which means I won't have anywhere to put them when they grow up, as the current place is maxed out.

It'd actually be better if she got laid off... she could get a job in Indy right away and the severance could be the downpayment on a new house, but now if she keeps her job (which pays more) we might NOT be able to buy due to the uncertainty of maybe more layoffs, even though we're 90% sure she's untouchable. Stupid layoffs.
