Finally my turn, roughly 1,000 gal plywood build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say that 2 x 75 would be adequate. It's really about how effectively you use the space, and how much your main tank overflows into it with the power off.

Thats a fair point. I'm thinking that is the route I'm going to take. One 150 gal stock tank would be a bit cheaper but I'd prefer to be able to see into the sump from the side anyway.

Make a coast to coast overflow in your plywood tank you will love it.
150g is plenty for a sump. what type of sump are you thinking of building

I am planning to do a coast to coast, however it will be on the left side of the tank. One on the rear wall would be nice but I don't want any plumbing behind the tank so I can have it a bit closer to the wall. I figured a 48" overflow should be sufficient. As for the sumps, I'm thinking a couple brute garbage cans stuffed with media that flow into the sumps. I'm open to suggestions however as I've never had a tank anywhere near this size.

Did get a lot done on the basement yesterday. All the old, terribly wired electrical was removed. Most of the boxes in the way of ceiling drywall came out. Only have one I will need to box around. Started wiring the new lights as well. Made a lot of progress overall, I'm very happy with how it went. I'll get up some new pics tonight.

Ok, took a break tonight on the basement so thought I'd finally give an update. Not nearly as far as I would like to be but it is coming along. Last night I finished gutting the rest of it, all the trash is carried out of the basement. So, so pics and what I've been going through!

I decided I wanted to open up the stairs and remove a lot of the wall. Freaking amazing choice! It looks so much better already.

Some random pics, bar was still in at this point and my trash pile was getting massive-

We got some wiring done, but have a ways to go still. Once studs are up we can start wiring outlets. We discovered that the basement has an overabundance of circuits. There were three circuits in the basement, not counting one for the ejector pump and one or the sump pump.

So as we get the lights wired up, we will put the lights on the finished side, unfinished side and regular outlets all on the same circuit. That will leave us two open circuits. At least one will go to the tank, I'm considering both as this project gets bigger the longer it takes.

So some of the new wiring, 14-2 connecting all the lights-

This is the box the two open circuits are ending in at the moment-

So, a couple other updates. I placed an order for all my drywall, green board, studs and foam, Lowe's delivered it last Sunday. I have a nailer, studs will start going up tomorrow I'm hoping. Hopefully from here the project speeds up, but we shall see!

Also, I've been on the search for tanks for a sump and quarantine tank. I had found a store selling new 75 gal tanks for $125, they would give me a $10/tank discount if I bought a few of them. Then I discovered a closing store very local to me, selling their display tanks. 75 gal tanks for $15 and 125 for $30. I ended up buying three of the 75s and a 125. Thinking 125 quarantine tank, 75s for sumps.

They are also selling a couple of nice display tanks. I'm far too tempted to buy one, put it in my dining room and run the plumbing down to the basement with the rest of the system.

Need a bit of cleaning, but the price is right. It is 48x36x18. Would make a nice pup tank in the future, some fish upstairs for me. Not a huge volume of water but I figure tied into a 1000 gal tank and a couple hundred in sumps it should be fine. Unless someone convinces me otherwise I may go to the store tomorrow and put down a deposit on it.

So there is tonight's update. Nothing too exciting, but at least some fish stuff for a change. Any thoughts or tips would be fantastic!

It will always get worse before it gets better, enjoy the ride the results will be well worth the effort! I am very jealous of your tank finds! I'd pick up one of those beautiful displays if I were you :)

Honestly the price of the tanks surprised me. I saw the ad for them, I really thought that they would be in crap shape, but they all look pretty decent. $80 something for those four tanks might be the best deal I ever get. I'm considering grabbing another 75 gal tomorrow to be honest.

The displays are $350 each. Nice acrylic, come with the stand, one of them comes with a sump, pump, skimmer and some other stuff. Not that I'll use any of them if I run it to the main system, but still.

And I am certainly enjoying the work. I'd really like to have the tank set up, but it is actually a good time doing this work on my own. It is satisfying!

I assume you mean for someday when I get to the tank? After doing some research I'm going to go the Max ACR route. Fairly cheap and seems to be easy to use

Thank you, but couldn't understand. What is Max ACR route? Also a link to buy it. I'm planning to build 12x5x3 too. My gars need a bigger tank.

I don't have a link on me, but if you go to eBay and search Max ACR you'll find it. As far as I know that's the only place it is sold. All the info you'll need on it is on that page. If you can't find it I can look it up when I have a chance tomorrow.
