since snakeheads are for the most part illegal in the US reccomending them to someone in the us, and knowing they are in the US is bad fishkeeping. secondly dwarf snakeheads are legal in a few northern states. California i'm pretty sure isn't one of them.. thirdly those nice parenst of your would likely leave you high and dry and not support your hobby if you started breaking the laws.... channa are illegal for a reason, they are invasive as hell. personaly I'de report the petstore or at the very leats do my business elsewhere. the black market has no place, and only gives fuel to the lobbyists in government who pass most of these regulatory laws to begin with.
Planted tanks are very nice. just kep in mind once all is said and done to set one up properly you're talk about double the cost in equipment of a standard set-up in teh very least. but patience and buying your equipment as you find it with good deals can save you alot of money. Ide start with the plant substrate you wish, add a few low light plants, such as javas, crypts, and as you add lighting, co2, ect. add more diverse plants. the fish can go in as soon as your tank cycles. DIY co's is relatively inexpensive but a hassle to deal with. but could be an option until you can save up for a better system. Lighting, not much I can suggest but I do love my Hagen t5 high output twin tube yadd yadda.. fixture.
fishwise.. whatever you like that isn't interested in digging up or eating plants really.. and likes the water perameters you're tank has.
