Okay... Im going to be the stick in the mud, lol. I have a whole different idea
I would not recommend a teugelsi or an ornate in the 55g at all. Also no to the weeksii and ansorgii. Unless an 18" wide tank like a 75g were to come into play, I would stay with some of the upper jaws that do not grow as large. I would look at rehoming the ornate now and get something more suited like a delhezi, sen or one of the palmas complex.
While there would be some fun growout time with the potentially larger polys, at some point the larger size would come into play and a bit more room would be nice to have. So my vote is to get a 75g or bigger if you want to go down the large poly path or stick with upper jaws that will work long term if you are going with the 55g for a while.
That is always the hope. But I've seen way too often life has something different to say about that tank upgrade. So that's why I say larger tank before larger polys.
Since there were four larger polys brought up (teugelsi, ornate, weeksii and ansorgii) I personally would like to see a tank with a 24" x 72" footprint, so basically a 180g or larger.
no, I appreciate you being a "stick in the mud." I want to provide my polys with the best possible care. That's good to know about the getting the bigger tank immediately. I was hoping I could stay with the 55g for a year. I don't think I could get rid of my ornate, as he is my first poly and the best. So the better option might be to look into bigger tanks first, something in between size, a little smaller than 180, until I can upgrade. Will look around instead of at the 180+s.
yeah I've been looking on craigslist every week. Contacted someone about their 175, but they haven't gotten back to me. My friend has a 300 for sale...my parents aren't too keen on a fish tank the size of the kitchen. So thinking of places to put it. Or go for 180g cause it's smaller. You have some time still with the 55g but I would be shopping and thinking sooner than later for his tank. Ornate do tend to grow quite quickly compared to other poly.
lol, you have been hanging around here too long! We are starting to make you question if a big tank like that is even big enough! The 300g has a 24" width. I know the wider the better, would that be enough though?
