You can put a 2" T fitting on the intake, that will increase your intake to 4" and will reduce the suction force by half and not impact flow pressure to much. You can put a strainer on each end of the T fitting but that will significantly reduce flow.......

Hmm...Im sure that would work but dont want to reduce it anymore. I need to build like a cage around it or something....
Something like this will work...Im going to head to the local craft store today to get me some. Unless someone has a better idea.
Walmart has stuff like that right now cheap.

Not true. It was put on a flow test bench and there was almost unmeasureable restriction. It's bell shaped and opening on all sides including the bottom. The ones that look like the ones on HOB filters measure a three pound restriction.
