Finally upgrading to a respectable tank setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats very nice

Nice tank!

I would recommend you skip the playsand. It is really fine and that means that it will easily get sucked up the filter and kill them. I lost two AC 70s from playsand on my old 55 gallon and my fish didn't even get the sand into the filter! I say buy some silica sand, although its usually white, it isn't as fine meaning it will be safer on the filters. Not to mention it won't cloud as much when poured into the tank.

Thanks. Ive been mulling over using 3m colorquartz instead and the play sand I bought has a bunch of shells and other crap in it so I brought it back today after work. I think Im going to try and find some 3m colorquartz instead once I move up to Orlando. Ill probably do a mix between the white and buff color.

I know I didnt get any pics up yesterday but Ive been busy packing and the tank and new stand are already in the uhaul ready to be moved out tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for pics as Ill have the tank and filter set up at the new house.

As far as stocking, I think Im going to try and get rid of the africans and set up a wild south/central american tank with a pair of heros notatus as the centerpiece and a couple of other moderately rare cichlids.

Nice tank, love the bowfronts. SA/CA cichlids, now your talking! :D
What's your plans on that sump?

Thanks for the interest and comments everyone.

Its set up at my house up in Otown but I had to come back the same day. The tank is filled, filter is running, no leaks, and I threw in a few dozen goldfish to start cycling but no pics. I know I know :banhim:

The sump is about 30 gallons or so and its got some filter floss and bioballs and a sponge. Nothing fancy but I would like a little bit faster flow so I may get a more porous sponge and take out some of the filter floss. Ill also be running an emperor 400 and either an xp2 or xp3 depending on whichever I feel like bringing up there and sell the other.

I do have a little bit of a problem though. The new stand that was built for it (not by me) was basically a rectangular stand with the top piece shaped to fit underneath the bowfront so the curved front is basically sitting on a shelf. It was level and completely upright before the tank was filled but after filling, there is about a 1" difference in distance form the wall between the top and bottom of the tank so its now leaning forward. I had my roomate prop up a 2x4 underneath the unsupported portion of the front of the tank until I go back up on thursday and ill fix it properly. I dont want any potential for a tipped over tank, especially when its 175 gallons of water on a new carpet in a rental.

And Ive decided to go with a south american tank but I have to sell off my africans first. Ill start planning stocking once that becomes a reality.
