how bout the 2217 and a emp 400,kind of woried about the 404,about 5 years old and had some chettering before where the impeller woud stop and go.your info has been greatly apr,

This is a great filtration setup. I have this exact same thing on a 125 and works phenominal! I love the classics from Eheim although not the biggest emperor fan because of noise. They do great filtration though. I am a filtration nut so I will be adding another canister filter on this setup as well. Maybe another Eheim or I might try the new Mulitstage c-360 series from marineland. GL on the new filters!

You might need a new impeller on the 404..thats all of 12.00 or so. I hide the hydro 5's in the corners behind decorations of tall plastic plants....in one case we have one behind a piece of drift wood. A single dual outlet air pump can run two of them and in emergancies they can be used with battery powered air pumps.

I must have a strange bunch of emporers because none of mine make any noise at all...They WILL make a splashing noise until the filters seasoned but after that they are fine. I clean out the spray bars...intake pipe and impeller housing every 6 months or so and thats the extent of servacing...I have one unit thats 9 years old that I just put a new impeller in and another thats 11 years old I havn't touched.

If only one thing worked then by now all of us would have scrapped everything else and that's all we'd have. I think a large part of what filteration system works best is what you trust and what your personally comfortable with. The best canister filter on earth is worthless if it's so hard to servace that you never bother...

Canisters are harder to servace than HOB units. The FX5 has a nice backflush feature but the rest need cleaned out fairly regularly. The 405 (404) has quick disconnect hoses that most of the older designs lack. (Eheim classics)

Definately not for the old classics. I have an OLD 2217 from years ago and it has to be 10 years old maybe more and it has the quick disconnects. The only draw back the filter stays constantly primed even when it's not on and when you do maintenance it kinda gets a little messy because you have to open both valves to get rid of the vaccum. It kinda likes to spray everywhere but not to bad. I mean they are a hard filter to do maintenance on but I love them and find them to be the best. Other canister filters don't spray everywhere and you don't need to open all valves to get rid of the vaccum seal. Most just pop off. HOBs are easier to maintain but I am more of a canister and wet/dry kinda guy so.... I don't mind getting a little messy.

I should have been a bit clearer...the 404/405 series has a single hose and shut off valve arrangement thats FAR simpler to use than any of the early designs. Even my old marineland magnums had so called quick disconnect fittings and valves. they worked...more or less but remained a PITA until I retired them.

Oh ok I get what you are saying now. The Eheims have two hoses and 4 valves to shut off which is kinda a pain in the butt.
