My P's have been nipping at each other lately, and parts of their fins have been bitten off. My questions are, will the fins ever grow back to normal, how long will it take if they do, are there any additives i could add to the water to speed the process. I have 5 P's each between 4 and 5 inches, they have been together for about 3 weeks now. They eat regularly and have a varied diet. THANKS =]

Yes, their fins will grow back, it'll take a week or two for them to be perfect again. The catch being, you would have to seperate each and every piranha.

Add a pinch of AQ salt to your water, to aid healing. Lower your temp, to cut back on aggression. You'll be fine in no time flat!! ^^

what tank size you got them in.

what piranhas are they

dave

They are Red Bellies and are in a tank thats 48inx18inx26in and they have a semi large piece of drift wood in the center and two large artificial plants on opposite sides

5 red bellies in 90gallon (48inx18inx26in) 4-5" are just a little tight (crowed) in there IMO.

With the piranha you got right now you need 125gallon or bigger to live for life. Keep in mind the piranha are very unpredictable, you never what will happen to them.

Having large take doesn't always avoid the aggression, but it does help less fighting, territories and aggression.

how are some tips to avoid them for fin nips and fighting

-keep temp low 76f
-keep them well fed (feed them 2-3 time a day)
-give them more room to swim (i suggest take the wood and plants out)
-put some convict in there so they can play and mess around with the convict not each other

Piranha can heal very fast, add some salt and melafix when you do water change...should be find for a week or so.

Monkey~Brain, you shouldn't condone putting a fish in there to get torn to pieces....

Feeding them more often, and lowering your temperature are both good ideas. But instead of removing your driftwood, either put it off to one side, or if it's small enough, put it toward the back further. however, don't remove it, as this breaks the line of sight, and is an advantage to your weaker piranhas. Same flys for the plants.

Add some places to hide. Flower pots turned on their side work well, since I only have a single, I built him a cave out of flagstones. He hides in there most of the time, so if you want big bad piranhas that'll try to eat you through the glass, you may want to discount that suggestion (even though they're more aggressive in groups)

I wouldn't bother with the melafix, not if it's just little fin nips

unless he get a bigger tank it would be easy not to do it..if you ask, most piranha owner put and breed convict to feed piranha. I would rather have my piranha play with the convict the each other.

Remove, rearrange, redecoration are no different. once you touch the set up you are messing up the enviroment.

Add some places to hide.

He only got 90gallon with 5 red bellies soon to become mature and adult you do really want to add more hiding place?

hiding place are great, however if you have 90gallon you might want to take some stuff out for them to have room to swim. By adding more mean you taking the swim room away, you add more aggression as more territories.

Note: shusi I am not argue with you or anything..I am just bring out some point here. You also give great advise. Like I said before piranha owners have many and they own way to raise and keep piranha.

cheers.

how much fin nipping is going on?

its the nature of the fish so its not really a big deal

you can:
lower the temp
upgrade the tank
get rid of a couple
or leave it be (as long as its not actual wounds their fine and will heal quicklly)

just curious did you recently add or remove any deco from the tank that could cause the loss of territiories?
