  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When ever fire eel topics come up and tank size is mentioned, i like to refer people to this video... i mean seriously, how can you tell me a fish of this size can comfortably live in a 125G for life...

I know. It like put a kid in a small box and saying it there room. :(

That video is cool, seen it awhile back. 2 years to get to 40" is unbelievable. I've had mines for 2 years since it was a 3" baby and it is around 12-14" now. I wonder what his eel ate??

^ i've always wondered what people fed their eels to get them so fat as well... i'm guessing earthworms / nightcrawlers and other high protein diets?

The eel was fine absolutely fine I handfed him bloodworms everyday and he was actually one of the more enjoyable fish to keep but to make a long story short I bought 2 5 inch Green severums and they gave all my fish the infamous white spot disease including my fire eel and after a week of treatment he didnt make it he didnt die because he was miserable or hated life or hated his massive cave in his 75 that was hands down the most active fish ive owned next to my arrowanas which are in my big show tank which im tempted to buy another Fire eel and put it into my show tank just to see how big it will get I understand your entitled to your opinion but so am I and ive said this ten times already but no fire eel is suffering in a 125 talk to the hundreds or thousands of people that have them in 55 gallon tanks or below because I ashore you there are ten times more people with Fire eels in 55 gallon or lower tanks then there are with people with 450 gallon tanks and 40 inch Fire eels and if there were so many of these 40 inch Fire eels out there I could buy one for my show tank but there arent because other then the 5 to 10 MFK members you have with them no person or Pet Store in N.C. would have a 40 inch Fire eel period!
Wow, really? Let me ask you a question: is a red belly pacu okay in a 10 gallon unfiltered tank? There are probably 100x more people keeping them in those conditions than there are who keep thim in 450-600 gallon tanks... so according to your logic, that makes it okay, right? :headshake

I agree with Fat Homer, but I would think that kind of growth was probably largely genetic. A good diet definitely helps, but I doubt diet alone would make that much of a difference.

a few factors.. diet, genetics.. and I noticed Discus in the tank.. which leads me to surmise insane water changes. That is not normal growth rate in captivity. no doubt the fish was well cared for but I also wonder if it'll have issues with fatter liver disease. or even skeletal deformaties. For an animal to grow that quick, you really have to be careful that it's getting all the proper building blocks to have a long healthy life.

That video is acually my least favorite in reguards to fire eels, It shows how not to catch and move a large fish properly. The owner no doubt did care very well for his fish though.

^ Yeah, not sure i agree with his moving methods per se, but i do agree its a good demonstration of their potential size...
