I had a fire eel in a 75 for 8 years he was right at 20 inches a 125 is fine dude no question!
I feel sorry for your severely stunted eel. At 8 years, it should easily be over 36". There are multiple people on MFK who have 4-5 year old eels that are around (or well past) 36", which is undeniable proof as far as I'm concerned.

Edit: Just realized that the points I've made have already been made... guess I should read the entire thead before replying. lol

8 years is less then 1/2 the expected lif expectancy of these fish.. and less then 1/2 it's potential size... And I Imagine haveig my internal organs so cramped inside a body to small to contain them would feel delightfully ticklish....

You are condoneing Animla Abuse.. Plain and simple.. as for thinking of better ways of wasting 300 gallons of tank-water... you obviousely don't care much for spiney eels. Which is entirely your perogative.. Others... on the other hand can think of no better use of those 300 gallons of water.

1 fire eel would be fine in a 125 for approx 3 years before needing an upgrade. possibly as little as 2 but doubtful. Growth rates do vary. I would not get more then 1 unless you plan on a much larger tank/pond ect in the futer.. and as already reccomeded get an odd number, otheriwse you chance very much the more dominant fish focusin to much on the other and simply killing it.

Lets see those pics of your 16 year old 40 inch Fire eel in your 800gallon tank?

this is msmasspoly's 30+ incher, 3.5 years old in a 450. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=244838

I will not be getting one until I already have a larger tank.. I will be upgrading in 3 years, and as much as I want the eel now, I think it would be in its better interest if I wait until I have the new tank (Just because stuff happens...) I appreciate all of the answers!

I like the Asian swamp eels, but it looks like they get the same size as the fire, so wouldn't the same logic apply? I am going to go look into to sirens now..

Lesser Sirens get between 7-27 inches.. i do not want to assume anything though, so would they do ok?

i agree, i too have a 125, and with my brother recently purchasing a fire eel for his 200+ tank i was iching to get one as well. especially after listening to him tell me about how he hand feeds him and all the other good stuff about him. but doin my research and with my current stock list its just not the right time, or setup for me to do it.

You should see the fire eels at the Shed Aquarium, they are HUGE. Much larger than 3 foot IMO.

For something a bit different, I have a tanganyikan eel. The species name is M. elipsifer. He's been a super easy eel to keep and they only get to be 18". He took to blood worms right away then started eating pellets on his own. He will eat from my hands as well.

They can be a little tough to find but are well worth it IMO.

this is mine. He's fatter now I just don't have a recent picture. He gets along great with other fish and just minds his own business.

If that's not your cup of tea I would also do a swamp eel. They can do better in a 125 since they don't get as thick as a fir eel.

Wow he is pretty!! I do like the Asian swamp eel, but he gets up to 3 foot, and since that is why a fire eel wouldn't do well in my tank, wouldn't that mean neither would the Asian?
