Fire eel in a 125 with other fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
will a fire eel live in a 125? probably

will it reach it's maximum potential for growth and happiness? almost certainly not and i've yet to see it

keeping a fire eel in a 125 is a compromise in my opinion. possible, but not an ideal sized tank.

it can get up to 36" or 40"....

People put Oscars in a 20g. However, most on MFK won't condone that, just as they won't condone putting a Fire Eel in anything less then 180g.

Ultimately it's your tank and your money, so you can do with it how you please. This is just advise for the best interest of the eel.

If ashore you any fire eel thats in a 125 gallon tank might be doing a lot of things but suffering isnt one of them one in a 20 gallon might be suffering but all this talk about a 125 not being suitable is a joke give me a break like I said if you think you need to go out and buy a 300 gallon tank for a fire eel go for it I can think of more inventive ways to waste tank space!

you clearly have the minority opinion. most people agree that a 125 is on the small side for sure. it's not exactly a torture chamber but it's not recommended or ideal.

perhaps this is why your eel only got to 20 inches after 8 years while others have obtained 3ft in 3 years in a larger aquarium.

I agree.

Your absolutely right he hated all 8 years of his life was miserable and cramped and dreamed of a 1000 gallon aquarium so he could reach 5 feet in length and jump out of the tank and try and eat my dogs or my son with his huge frame!

Oh and yes 20 inches in a 75! LOL!

8 years is less then 1/2 the expected lif expectancy of these fish.. and less then 1/2 it's potential size... And I Imagine haveig my internal organs so cramped inside a body to small to contain them would feel delightfully ticklish....

You are condoneing Animla Abuse.. Plain and simple.. as for thinking of better ways of wasting 300 gallons of tank-water... you obviousely don't care much for spiney eels. Which is entirely your perogative.. Others... on the other hand can think of no better use of those 300 gallons of water.

1 fire eel would be fine in a 125 for approx 3 years before needing an upgrade. possibly as little as 2 but doubtful. Growth rates do vary. I would not get more then 1 unless you plan on a much larger tank/pond ect in the futer.. and as already reccomeded get an odd number, otheriwse you chance very much the more dominant fish focusin to much on the other and simply killing it.

you can keep trying to defend your opinion with sarcasm instead of empirical evidence but it's not going to change the fact that you most likely stunted your eel with a less than ideal aquarium.

your eel = 20"
average eel = 36"+

that's almost half the average size!

stop pretending to know what your fish was dreaming about and just accept the fact that you kept your fish in a less than ideal or generally smaller than recommended tank size. you can't talk to an eel to ask it how it feels, so instead you look for other signs that would indicate that your fish is stressed, such as stunted growth.
