Picked up a 4 inch fire eel yesterday and did my best to acclimate it to ia 20 gallon quarantine tank. pH is at 8.1. Anyone have experience with keeping these in higher pH levels?

It pretty much hangs out in its pvc pipe. Tried feeding bloodworms but it hasn't touched it yet. Maybe it will it them overnight.

Tank is cycled and water parameters are perfectly fine.

Nah he ate almost immediately but he was about 7-8" when I got him. Everything I've read said thatl it's really hard to get them to eat at first, especially when they're small. I think I just got lucky. I also read suggestions that you start by feeding them after lights are out for the night. or melt a cube of frozen bloodworms and use a turkey baster to put the blood worms directly in front of their mouth. My guy seems to like beef heart. Overall just be patient, it's just a fire eel being a fire eel.

Ok cool appreciatethe advice. If the food is still uneaten tomorrow morning I'll do a water change and will try feeding after lights out. Sounds like a prison feeding. :)

Just checked in on it and found it exploring the tank. All the food is gone which is a god sign. I know they are escape artists but my quarantine tank has a a few openings since I have two HOB filters on it. Do you think they can escape at this young of an age? Also, anyone feed your fire eels hikari sinking carnivore pellets?

yeah I think they're capable of escaping at any age. What I did was use pieces of acrylic on the sides of the hob's (kept in place by silicone but you can use duct tape) and squeezed a filter sponge above the hob's return. The sponge is hard to see but it's there

And sorry, I haven't tried pellets yet

Appreciate the pic. I'll make sure to cover all openings tonight.
