I just purchased a 6 inch peacock and a 8 inch tire track. Peacocks are the smallest spiny eels that I know of. They can max out at about 12 inches. But, I agree that a tire track can work in a 100 gal tank. Mine is 125 gal.
Not for life...

Peacocks are the smallest.

zig zag eel will be fine. i think they are the smallest spiny eel of the ones i know of. or get a TT like me. he's currently in a 100
zig zag eels grow larger than most other spiney eels, most of the sources ive found say they will grow to 36"
mine is in a 60 with a GT, a firemouth and a few bichirs. Never has any problems with my fish and is very active. I would definitely suggest you get yourself a zig zag it will be fine in your 150

Are fire eels over two feet or so really all that common? Is it really unreasonable to expect a 125-150 gallon tank to house one for life? These are fairly flexible and sedentary fish after all.

a 180 gal would be better but a 150 will last a pretty long time if ur gona upgrade in the next 2 or 3 years to a 180 or bigger u should be fine..........

a 125+ I wouldn't say is impossible to keep these fish in.. But... being as they can get over 36" you want to be prepared to go larger if need be. and there are many members with fire eels well past the 24" mark.

and to clear the zig zag eel up.. they are often sold as zig zags but are tire tracks.. Favarus(sp?) vs Aramatus (sp?) the difference is the belly markigns.. a tire track lacks the pattern on it's belly iir correctly? Zig zags get about 18" and the Tire track and Fire eel, imo the 2 largest species may get 36" +

fire eel can have pretty nice color... but i personaly love the pattern of the TT

My LFS has a nice fire eel for $12 (about 4-5 inches long) - I resisted temptation because the 150 is the biggest tank I will have for the next 5 years.

Would a full grown fire eel find a fish that was around the 3-4 inch mark a snack?
